How to Ask Your Mom to Let You Play Video Games

A respectful conversation, a look at the specific game, and a realistic schedule can help you and your mom decide on gaming rules together.

The best way to ask your mom to let you play video games is to choose a calm moment, explain which game you want and why, and invite her to talk through any concerns. Then propose a specific plan that puts responsibilities, sleep, and family time first. She may still say no, but a respectful, realistic conversation gives you a better chance of finding rules you can both accept.

Start with a conversation, not an argument

Ask when neither of you is upset or rushing. Be clear about the game you want to play rather than asking for unlimited gaming in general. Explain what interests you about it, then ask what worries her. Listen to the answer before offering a solution; her concern might be the game’s content, the amount of time you play, or whether gaming is affecting school, sleep, chores, or other activities.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that families discuss media rules together and choose rules that fit their routines and values. A family plan can include times or places where screens are off-limits, and it can be revisited as children mature. See the AAP’s guide to making a Family Media Plan.

Show her the specific game

Tell her the game’s title and offer to look at its rating and content together. A rating can help start the conversation, but it may not answer every question your family has about the game. Talk about any elements that concern her, such as violence, language, online chat, or purchases. The AAP suggests that an older child make a short case for why they want a particular game, while the family considers its content and its fit with their own standards. Its video-game guidance explains how families can make their own decisions about ratings and content.

Offer a realistic plan

Make your proposal specific enough that you can both tell whether it is working. Rather than promising to “play less,” suggest when you would play, what needs to be done first, and when you would stop. You might propose playing only after homework and chores are finished, with no gaming during meals or at bedtime. Agree on a check-in date so you can discuss whether the arrangement is working.

  • Time: Name the days or time of day you are asking for, and agree on a clear stopping point.
  • Responsibilities: Put homework, chores, and other agreed responsibilities first.
  • Balance: Protect sleep and leave room for exercise, outdoor play, reading, schoolwork, and family activities.
  • Review: Decide together when to check in and whether to keep or adjust the plan.

These are the kinds of family rules the AAP recommends discussing in a Family Media Plan. The plan should fit your household, not a promise that gaming is harmless or that every game is educational.

Address her concern directly

If she is worried about the game’s content

Offer to review the rating and the parts of the game she is unsure about. You can also offer to play a portion together so she can see what it is like. The goal is to discuss the actual game, not to insist that a rating settles the question.

If she thinks you play too long

Propose a specific stopping time and stick to it. If your device or platform has a timer or time-limit setting, ask whether she would like to use it to support the agreement.

Nintendo Wii Console, White Premium Bundle (Renewed)
  • Controllers are original OEM (not 3rd party)
  • Tested and works well. Nice condition

If she is worried about school, sleep, or chores

Address those priorities first: show that you can finish the responsibilities you have agreed on and keep gaming away from bedtime. If the current routine is not working, ask what you would need to do before she would consider changing the rules.

If she is concerned about chat or spending

Ask which boundaries would help her feel comfortable. Depending on the device or platform, parental controls may offer ways to manage communication, purchases, content, or time. These settings can support an agreement, but they do not replace talking about the rules. The AAP explains options in its guides to parental controls and healthy media limits and setting parental controls.

Suggest playing together

Invite your mom to try the game with you or ask her to watch you play. Sharing the experience can help her understand what you enjoy and give you both a natural way to talk about the game. The AAP describes co-playing and shared media use as opportunities for adults to better understand a child’s media experiences; see its guidance on sharing screen time.

If she says no

Do not argue, keep asking over and over, or try to get around the rules. A calm response is more likely to keep the conversation open: “Okay. Can you tell me what would need to change before you would reconsider?” Listen to her answer and follow the current rules. Parents can keep limits consistent even when a child disagrees, while using communication and family involvement to make those limits easier to understand. The AAP discusses this approach in its guidance on screen-time limits and disagreements.
