Keep a crate or other loot bag in your inventory, select its Open / Activate action, and use the input shown for your platform. On desktop, crates open with a right-click. Opening one consumes it and gives you randomized loot.
Open a crate or loot bag from your inventory
- Put the crate or loot bag in your inventory. These are usable items, not placed chests.
- Select the item and use its Open / Activate action. The general grab-bag method is to activate the item on the inventory screen (Official Terraria Wiki: Grab bags).
- Collect the loot it produces. Crates are consumable and can give randomized items such as ores, bars, potions, and accessories (Official Terraria Wiki: Crates).
Which button opens a box on your platform?
The input depends on the item, platform, and control bindings. Check the item’s tooltip and use the action it identifies rather than assuming every setup has the same button.

- Desktop: Right-click crates to open them.
- Controller: The crate page lists platform-specific inputs, including L2, LT, and ZL; Xbox uses Left Trigger. These examples may not match remapped controls.
- Mobile: Touch interaction can include double-tapping. Follow the prompt shown for the item.
The Crates page covers Desktop, Console, and Mobile and lists the relevant input variations (Official Terraria Wiki: Crates). Bindings can be changed in the game’s controls settings, so check your current layout if a listed input does nothing (Official Terraria Wiki: Game controls).
Do presents and other box-shaped items work the same way?
Yes. Presents are another box-shaped loot item: open one from your inventory with the platform’s indicated input. The Present page lists right-click, controller inputs, and double-tap depending on platform, and says presents can be opened from inventory at any time, even outside the Christmas season (Official Terraria Wiki: Present).

If by “box” you mean a placed chest rather than a crate or loot bag, it is a storage container, not an item to consume with Open / Activate.
