Cheats and command permission are required. For a single chunk, choose any coordinates inside it and use a radius-0 circle, such as /tickingarea add circle 100 64 200 0 base. Replace the coordinates with a point in your target chunk and base with a name you will recognize.
How to add a ticking area
- Enable cheats in the world and ensure you have permission to run commands. The Bedrock command reference lists the required permission as Game Directors. Microsoft’s command reference documents the syntax and options.
- Choose a point inside the target chunk. Chunks are 16 blocks by 16 blocks horizontally. The Y coordinate is part of the command, but the ticking area extends vertically through the world rather than stopping at that height. Microsoft’s ticking-area guide explains how the area is defined.
- Add the area. For one chunk, run
/tickingarea add circle 100 64 200 0 base, changing the coordinates and name as needed. To cover more chunks, use a larger circle radius or a rectangle. - Check that it was added. Run
/tickingarea list. Descriptive names make it easier to identify and remove areas later.
Choose a circle or rectangle
A circle is useful when the target is centered on a point; a radius of 0 covers the single chunk containing that point. The documented circle radius range is 0–4 chunks. A rectangle is defined by two opposite-corner coordinate triples and can fit a long or irregularly placed machine or farm more closely.

Use the smallest shape that covers what needs to keep ticking. Microsoft’s guide allows up to 10 ticking areas per world and up to 100 chunks in each area; the command reference separately documents the circle radius limit. Larger or more numerous areas can affect performance. Microsoft’s guide

Use preload only when startup order matters
You can include preload when adding an area or set it later with /tickingarea preload <name> [preload]. Preloading makes the area load before other chunks during world startup; it does not expand the area or make it render at a distance. Microsoft introduced the preload overload in Bedrock 1.18.30 and noted that entities must be loaded for an area to count as fully loaded and ticking. Bedrock 1.18.30 release notes
What “always loaded” does—and does not—mean
A ticking area keeps game processing active when players are far away. It does not force the client to draw distant terrain: rendering is controlled by render distance, while simulation distance ordinarily governs nearby game mechanics. A ticking area is therefore not a way to see a distant chunk from anywhere. Microsoft’s simulation and render distance guide

- Mob behavior is limited: mobs may despawn in ticking areas, and mobs do not spawn there unless a player is within simulation distance.
- Entities can stop moving: an entity that moves outside a ticking area can stop until it is within simulation distance.
- Achievements: the cited command and guide documentation does not establish whether enabling cheats disables achievements, so check the behavior for your world and platform rather than assuming.
Remove areas you no longer need
To remove one by its name, use /tickingarea remove base (substitute its actual name). You can also remove by a position inside the area with /tickingarea remove <position: x y z>, or clear all areas using /tickingarea remove_all. Use /tickingarea list to review what remains.
