Connect the PS2’s AV MULTI OUT port to matching TV inputs, select the right source, and set component video mode correctly. HDMI-only TVs need a compatible converter.

To connect a PlayStation 2, plug its cable into the console’s rear AV MULTI OUT port, connect the other end to matching inputs on the TV, then select that TV input. The original composite cable uses yellow for video and white and red for left and right audio. If your TV has no matching analog inputs, use a PS2-compatible HDMI converter or an analog video converter that explicitly supports the PS2 signal.

Connect a PS2 with the standard composite cable

The standard PS2 AV cable carries analog video and stereo audio. Match each plug to the TV’s labeled input; some televisions share inputs or use a breakout adapter, so the labels and TV manual take precedence over color alone. Sony’s PS2 manual identifies the rear AV MULTI OUT connection and the yellow video, white left-audio, and red right-audio plugs. Sony also advises turning the TV off while connecting, then selecting the input used by the console in its PS2-to-TV connection guidance.

  1. Turn off the TV.
  2. Insert the console end of the cable into the PS2’s rear AV MULTI OUT port.
  3. Connect yellow to composite video, white to left audio, and red to right audio. Follow the TV’s port labels if inputs are shared or colors differ.
  4. Make the remaining connections, then plug the PS2’s AC cord into a power outlet.
  5. Turn on the TV and PS2. On the TV remote, press Input or Source and choose the port you used. The label may read AV, Video, Composite, or an input number.

Choose the cable or converter that matches your TV

Look at the TV’s actual inputs before choosing a connection. The PS2’s native video connection is AV MULTI OUT, not HDMI. Sony lists compatible options including composite AV, component AV, S-Video, RFU, and SCART/Euro-AV. Its manual’s picture-quality comparison ranks RFU below the supplied AV cable, then S-Video, then component AV, while noting results vary by product and TV. Sony’s cable-type guide describes composite as standard-definition analog video and component as a separate analog video connection.

TV input PS2 connection What to know
Yellow composite video and red/white audio PS2 composite AV cable The simplest setup; carries standard-definition composite video and stereo audio.
Green, blue, and red component video plus red/white audio PS2 component AV cable Uses separate component video plugs. Set the PS2’s Component Video Out mode to Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr.
HDMI only PS2-specific HDMI converter or compatible analog-to-HDMI converter/scaler Check that the device supports the PS2 signal and follow its exact power and setup instructions.
S-Video or regional SCART/Euro-AV Matching PS2-compatible cable or connector Check the connector type and the TV’s input mode, including any regional or breakout adapter requirements.

If you need a replacement, choose a PS2 composite AV cable for composite inputs or a PS2 component AV cable for component inputs. Sony’s component AV cable model is SCPH-10490. A compatible direct cable avoids an extra conversion step when the TV has the matching input.

Mcbazel PS2 to HDMI Adapter for PlayStation 2 & 1, HDMI Converter Supports 4:3/16:9 Aspect Ratio Switch, 480p/720p Output, Plug & Play, Compatible with PS1/PS2 Phat & Slim
  • WORKS WITH PS2 & PS1 — PHAT AND SLIM — Connect your PS2 (both original Phat and Slim models) or PS1 directly to any modern HDTV, monitor, or projector via HDMI. No drivers required. Just plug in and play your classic game library on your modern display within minutes.
  • WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE PICTURE — This adapter converts your PS2/PS1's analog AV signal to HDMI so it works on modern TVs. The PS2 hardware outputs a standard-definition signal (480p max) — the adapter upscales this to 720p for a cleaner look, but cannot go beyond the console's own limits. Great for retro gaming; not a 4K upgrade.
  • 4:3 / 16:9 ASPECT RATIO SWITCH — One button to toggle between classic 4:3 and widescreen 16:9 display. Supports 480p and 720p resolution output. Low-latency signal processing for responsive, lag-free gameplay — ideal for action and rhythm games where timing matters.
  • POWER REQUIRED — PLEASE READ BEFORE BUYING — This adapter requires an external DC 5V/1A USB power source to operate. A USB cable is included; a USB power adapter is NOT included. Use any standard phone charger or plug into your TV's USB port. No power = no signal output.
  • IMPORTANT — PS2 AND PS1 ONLY — Works exclusively via the PS2/PS1 AV output port. Does NOT support PS3, PS4, or PS5. Does NOT work with HDMI capture cards, splitters, or passthrough devices — connect directly from console to TV. Not compatible with BlackMagic brand displays.

Set the PS2 component video mode correctly

A component connection can produce a missing or unstable picture if the PS2’s output mode does not match the TV input. For component video, the setting must be Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr. Sony’s PS2 quick reference says to choose RGB for a television that only supports RGB input.

  1. Connect the standard composite AV cable temporarily if you cannot see the PS2 setup screen with the component cable.
  2. Turn on the PS2 and open System Configuration.
  3. Find Component Video Out and select Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr for a component-video TV, or RGB for an RGB-only input.
  4. Turn off the console if needed, connect the component cable, select the TV’s component input, and restart the PS2.

Connect a PS2 to an HDMI-only TV

Because the PS2 outputs through AV MULTI OUT rather than a native HDMI port, an HDMI-only TV needs an active, compatible converter—not merely a cable with an HDMI plug. Choose a PS2-specific HDMI adapter or an analog-to-HDMI converter/scaler whose documentation says it supports the PS2 signal. Sony’s Answer Co. ANS-P066 connects to AV MULTI OUT and outputs HDMI; its instructions note that users with a prior D-terminal or S-terminal setup may need to change the component output mode from RGB to Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr. Kaico’s PS1/PS2 adapter is another manufacturer-documented example and uses USB power.

Fix common connection problems

  • No picture: Confirm the PS2 is on, reseat the plugs, and verify that the TV is set to the input where the cable or converter is connected.
  • Component picture is missing or unstable: Check that Component Video Out matches the input: Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr for component video or RGB for an RGB-only TV. If you cannot reach the menu, reconnect composite AV temporarily to change the setting.
  • No picture through an HDMI converter: Check the converter’s instructions for required power, supported PS2 output modes, and TV-resolution compatibility. Also confirm the correct HDMI input is selected; requirements vary by device.
  • No sound through optical audio: Some PS2 software does not send audio through DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL). Use the audio plugs on the AV MULTI OUT cable or another compatible analog audio connection instead, as described in Sony’s PS2 quick reference.
  • Picture changes through a VCR or DVD recorder: Sony warns that copy protection on some DVDs can make the image unstable or alter brightness. Connect the PS2 directly to the TV if this happens; see Sony’s PS2 manual.
