First check which game you own: the original Overcooked! supports local co-op, Overcooked! 2 adds online play, and Overcooked! All You Can Eat supports cross-platform multiplayer between PC and consoles. The setup depends on your edition, platform, and whether you want to play together on one device or online.

Ask everyone which edition they have and what platform they use. The multiplayer options are not interchangeable across the series.

Team17 explains that the original was designed as local co-op and lacks the infrastructure for online multiplayer in its Overcooked! 2 FAQ. Steam’s Remote Play Together is a potential workaround for Steam users, but it is a Steam feature rather than native online multiplayer; check the feature for the specific game listing and platform before relying on it.
Set up local multiplayer
- Start the game on the device everyone will share. Choose the local or couch co-op option from the game’s menus. Exact menu wording and button-by-button steps vary by edition and platform, so there is no single universal menu path.
- Connect or assign inputs. On PC, Mac, and Linux, Team17 says two local players can split one keyboard. Available controller and keyboard options otherwise depend on the platform.
- Confirm each player can control a character before starting a level. If a player is not joining, check the game’s input prompt and reconnect or reassign that player’s device.
Set up online multiplayer in Overcooked! 2
Campaign
Open the story or campaign mode and invite players from your friends list. Team17’s FAQ says campaign players need to invite friends; it does not describe campaign as a matchmaking mode.

#1 Best Overall
- Get ready for a double helping of cooperative cooking as Overcooked! And Overcooked! 2 come together in chaotic Harmony.
- Overcooked! Play solo or engage in classic, chaotic couch co-op for up to four players in both co-operative and competitive challenge modes.
- hold onto your aprons… it's time to save the world (again!)
- Chop, Fry and serve your way through a series of unconventional kitchens. Play with over 20 chefs in 75 levels across both games!
- includes the base game for both Overcooked! And Overcooked! 2
Arcade or Versus
Choose Arcade or Versus if you want matchmaking rather than campaign invitations. Team17 lists matchmaking for these modes.
Steam and Epic cross-play
- Confirm that everyone is playing Overcooked! 2 on Steam or Epic. This cross-play guidance applies to those PC storefronts, not to every console or edition.
- Make sure Steam players are using the cross-play branch and that players’ game versions match.
- Use the Team17 in-game friend system to find or invite one another.
Team17’s cross-play instructions cover the branch and friend-system requirements. If players cannot connect, compare their branch and version before troubleshooting anything else.

Set up cross-platform play in All You Can Eat
For a group split between PC and consoles, Team17 identifies Overcooked! All You Can Eat as the edition with cross-platform multiplayer between PC and consoles. Open its in-game Team17 friend menu and send invitations there. The cross-platform guidance is specific to this edition; do not assume the original Overcooked! or standalone Overcooked! 2 offers the same PC-to-console support.

- Local play on PC, Mac, or Linux: two players may share one keyboard, according to Team17.
- Online play: Team17 says each online player needs their own controller or keyboard.
- Console or mixed-platform play: available input choices depend on the platform. Confirm the devices each player can use in their version of the game.
Team17’s input guidance appears in its FAQ. The exact controller requirements and console online-subscription rules are not established universally; check the relevant platform and region.
