Steam does not document a recipient-facing history that reliably names everyone who sent you a gift. To check a received game, look at its license record in your signed-in account; to identify the sender, search the email account linked to Steam for the original gift notification. Steam’s documented View Gift History feature is for gifts you purchased and sent, not a complete received-gift list.
Check the game’s license record

Sign in to Steam and open your account’s license and product-key activation page.

Look for the game in the list and check its acquisition details. Steam requires sign-in to view this account-specific page.
Steam’s public help documentation does not confirm which details appear for every received gift. Steam Community users report that a license record may indicate a game was acquired as a gift, but may not identify the giver. Treat this as a way to check how the game was obtained, not a guaranteed sender lookup.

Search the email account linked to Steam
If the license record does not name the giver, search the email address associated with your Steam account for the game’s title and phrases such as “received a gift” or “Steam gift.” Community users describe the original notification as a practical way to find the sender. This only works if the message is still in your mailbox and your search finds it.
Use Steam’s gift history for gifts you sent
-
Sign in to Steam and open your Inventory.
-
Select the “…” menu, then choose View Gift History.

Steam Support documents this path for viewing gift history from the purchaser’s account. It is useful for gifts you bought and sent, but it is not a definitive record of gifts you received or a way to identify every giver. Steam’s separate purchase history is under your account menu: choose Account Details, then View purchase history. That shows purchases made by the signed-in account; it should not be mistaken for a received-gift history.
If the gift is still pending
Open the Steam gift notification and accept or decline it. Steam says a delivered gift can be accepted within 30 days. If you take no action during that period, Steam automatically cancels the purchase and refunds the purchaser. See Steam Support’s Steam Gifts help page for its gift guidance.

Keep gift-management records separate
Steam’s Extra Copies documentation covers promotional giftable copies. Available extra copies appear in Inventory and can be accessed through Games > Manage gifts & guest passes. This manages giftable copies; it is not a complete record of games other people gave you.
Which Steam record should you use?
| Record | What it helps you check | Can it identify the sender? |
|---|---|---|
| Inventory > “…” > View Gift History | Gifts purchased and sent by the signed-in account, according to Steam Support. | Not a reliable recipient-side lookup. |
| Account license history | How a game license was obtained; sign-in is required at the license page. | Community reports say it may indicate a gift without naming the giver. |
| Email linked to Steam | Finding the original gift notification, if it remains available. | May identify the sender in the retained message. |
| Account purchase history | Purchases made by the signed-in account, under Account Details > View purchase history, as described by Steam Support. | Not proof of a received-gift history. |
If you still cannot find the sender
Check that you are signed in to the account that received the game, then search the linked email account, including archived or spam folders if available. If the license entry is missing or unclear, contact Steam Support through the signed-in help site. Support may help with an account-specific issue, but there is no guarantee it can retrieve a sender record that is no longer visible.
