Saving progress in a Mario game on Nintendo Switch depends on the exact game: there is no single save button or procedure for every Mario title. Save from within the game using its own instructions. Nintendo Switch Online cloud backup is a separate, optional safeguard for supported games—not a requirement for normal saving.
How do you save in a Mario game?
Use the save option or method provided by the specific game you are playing. “Mario” can mean several different Switch games, and the available official guidance does not establish one save menu or button sequence that applies to all of them. Check the game’s pause or options menu, and follow its on-screen instructions. For precise steps, you need the full game title.

Where is Switch save data stored?
Nintendo stores save data in the console’s system memory, whether you play a downloaded game or use a game card. Nintendo Support states: “Game save data cannot be saved or copied to a microSD card.” Nintendo’s Data Management FAQ also explains that archiving or deleting downloaded software does not delete its save data; you can redownload the software and continue with the progress still on the console.
Is cloud backup required to save your progress?
No. The game’s own saving is separate from Nintendo Switch Online’s Save Data Cloud service. Cloud backup is optional protection and requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. The individual game must also support the feature. Nintendo says the vast majority of Switch titles support Save Data Cloud, but advises checking the specific game’s eShop listing or product information. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance explains the limitation.

Check whether a game supports cloud backup
Look at the game’s eShop listing or product information, or open the game’s software menu and look for Save Data Cloud. For a supported game, Nintendo’s instructions let you select a user and back up that user’s save. See Nintendo’s instructions for identifying compatible games.
How to restore a cloud backup
Only download a backup if you have checked that it is the copy you want. Nintendo warns that downloading cloud save data replaces the existing console save for that game, and the replaced data cannot be recovered.

What to check if progress seems missing
- Check the user profile. Save data is associated with a user, so open the game under the profile you used when playing. Nintendo warns that deleting a user deletes that user’s save data. See Nintendo’s save-data troubleshooting guidance.
- Confirm the game’s own save method. Recheck its pause or options menu and any on-screen instructions; save behavior varies by title.
- Check cloud compatibility before looking for a backup. Not every game supports Save Data Cloud, and membership alone does not make an unsupported game compatible.
- Do not look for a microSD copy. Switch save data cannot be saved or copied to a microSD card.
- Before restoring, compare which copy is newer. A cloud download replaces the current console save, and Nintendo says the overwritten data cannot be recovered.
