If you’re testing whether mods caused a problem, disable or remove them for testing, then exit without saving before re-enabling them.
Before removing a mod: protect your saves
- Exit The Sims 4 completely before moving or deleting mod files.
- Copy
Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Savesto a separate location, such as another folder or a USB drive. The EA Forums backup guidance recommends keeping a separate copy. - Check the mod creator’s current removal instructions. Mods that add systems or content used by a save may need cleanup in-game before their files are removed.
Keep the backup separate from the Sims 4 user folder. If you are not certain which files belong to the mod, move the suspected files to a clearly labeled holding folder outside that user folder rather than permanently deleting them right away.
Remove one known mod
- Open
Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods. - Identify every file belonging to the target mod, using its creator’s instructions or download folder structure. Remove only those files; avoid deleting unrelated mods or custom content.
- Launch the game and inspect the save and household affected by the mod. If something is missing or behaving unexpectedly, stop and use the creator’s recovery guidance or restore a backup rather than continuing to save over the original.
Removing files is different from turning off custom content in the game’s settings. Deleting or moving files removes them from the Mods folder; the in-game setting only disables or enables custom content and mods.
What to do with mod-dependent save content
There is no universal rule that every mod can be removed without consequences. The EA-hosted community guide notes that a mod adding a world may leave saves that use it unusable, while presets and sliders can generally be removed safely. It also advises checking whether a Sim should leave a custom career or whether modded food and plates should be cleared first. These are mod-specific community cautions, not guarantees for every creator’s content. Follow the creator’s instructions for the exact mod you use. EA Forums mod-removal guidance

Find a broken mod by testing in batches
If you do not know which mod is causing a crash, loading failure, or in-game issue, EA recommends isolating the files systematically. No single symptom proves a mod is responsible. Start with gameplay-changing mods before custom content, because gameplay mods are more likely to cause problems.
- Close the game and move all files out of the Mods folder.
- Launch the game and test the same save or situation. Do not save during a test with content disabled.
- If the issue disappears, put some of the removed mods back and test again.
- If the problem returns, split that batch in half and test each half. Repeat until the problematic mod or group is identified.
- Keep track of which files are in each batch so you can restore the others without losing track.
EA’s The Sims 4: Mods, game updates, and error codes explains this batch-and-half approach and notes that creators may need time to update mods after a game update.

After a game update: disable, test, then re-enable
EA’s post-update process is a temporary test, not a file deletion procedure. In the game, go to Game Options > Other > Enable Custom Content and Mods to disable content. Launch and test the game, then exit without saving. Check the mod creator’s compatibility notes before turning the setting back on and restarting the game.
Do not choose “Save and Exit” while custom content and mods are disabled. EA warns that doing so before re-enabling them may remove that content from the saved game. See EA’s update and mods instructions.

If you use the CurseForge app
CurseForge support describes deleting mod files manually from the Sims 4 Mods or Tray folders. Its app’s select-all deletion has a separate warning: it also deletes saved Sims and buildings in the app’s library/gallery, though not those “in-game.” Review the app’s current confirmation text and preserve anything you want to keep before using bulk deletion. Recover or isolate a problem with a clean user folder
If the game still behaves incorrectly after removing mods, EA’s backup and reset instructions can help determine whether the issue is in the previous Sims 4 user folder or downloaded content. A normal-running game after a reset points toward something in the prior folder; restoring backed-up folders or saves one at a time can narrow down the cause. Work from a copy and preserve the original backup while testing.
