To stop new tree seedlings from appearing on your Stardew Valley farm, place paths or flooring over the tiles where you do not want seeds to land. Mature farm trees other than stumps have a nightly chance to try to plant a seed up to three tiles away. Paving blocks seed placement on covered tiles; any eligible, uncovered tile in range can still receive one.

How tree spreading works on the farm

Each night, a mature tree on the farm—unless it is a stump—has a 15% chance to attempt to plant one seed. The game selects a tile up to three tiles away in any direction. A seed takes root only if its target is a valid, empty tile. Trees do not destroy paths or crops when spreading. The Stardew Valley Wiki’s Trees reference describes these mechanics.

This is a seed-placement attempt, not a guarantee that a seedling appears: if the selected tile is not valid, no seed takes root there. A small paved patch only protects its own tiles, so seedlings may appear elsewhere within range.

Keep gaps between trees clear

If your main concern is seedlings appearing between tapped trees, pave the gaps where you want to keep the ground clear. This reduces available landing spots in those spaces, but does not prevent attempts from reaching uncovered tiles nearby.

Reduce seedlings throughout the area

To block new seedlings across a larger grove, pave every eligible landing tile within three tiles of the trees you want to keep. That means more than just the spaces immediately beside each trunk. This layout recommendation follows from the documented range and empty-tile placement condition; paths do not stop a tree from making its nightly attempt.

Paths and flooring prevent seeds from being placed on the tiles they cover. They do not stop a seed that has already taken root from growing: common tree seedlings can grow on paved land. So paving is preventive only when it is in place before a seed lands.

Remove seedlings that have already appeared

Use a tool to clear unwanted seedlings. The tool options depend on the seedling’s growth stage and your Foraging level:

  • Stage one: An axe, hoe, or pickaxe can remove the seed if you have Foraging level 1 or higher.
  • Stages two and three: An axe, hoe, pickaxe, scythe, or weapon can clear the seedling. Use an axe if you want the option that can yield wood.

These removal options are listed in the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Trees reference.

Leave room for trees you want to mature

A seedling cannot grow past stage four if a mature tree occupies any of its eight adjacent tiles. Leave at least one tile of separation around trees you want to grow fully. This is a separate issue from seed placement: paving can block a new seed from landing, but a seedling already planted on paving can still grow.

What changes outside the farm?

Trees do not spontaneously spread planted seeds outside the farm, according to the Stardew Valley Wiki. If a pre-existing off-farm tree was cut down and its stump removed, however, it can regrow as a stage-three seedling; the wiki gives that regrowth a 20% chance per night.

Farm debris is a different mechanic: the Farm reference classifies maple, oak, and pine seed spread as non-destructive, while weeds, twigs, and rocks can spread destructively. Clearing trees does not by itself address those other kinds of debris.
