Red is 11 years old at the start of the original Pokémon Red. That age comes from the game’s U.S. instruction booklet and applies to its player character—not automatically to every version of Red in other Pokémon stories.
What age does the original game give Red?
The U.S. instruction booklet for Pokémon Red says: “You are an 11-year old boy living in Pallet Town with your mother.” The booklet addresses the player directly; Red is the conventional name for the boy players control. Does that age apply to every version of Red?
No. The booklet establishes the original game protagonist’s age at the outset; it does not establish a single age for every character called Red across games, animation, and manga. Pokémon Support says the creators intend questions not already answered in the games, films, or TV shows to be left to fans’ imaginations and interpretations. Pokémon Support’s guidance is dated January 30, 2026.
What do official pages say about Red’s later appearances?
Nintendo’s product overview describes beginning the Kanto journey as a young boy, but does not give an age. The official Pokémon Sun and Moon page lists Red and Green as Kanto Trainers appearing at the Battle Tree; it does not state Red’s age there. Neither description supports assigning him a different specific age.
