Instead of building solutions by moving and fusing objects across a huge 3D landscape, Princess Zelda copies objects and monsters into reusable “echoes,” then deploys them to explore, solve puzzles and fight. Nintendo’s developers connect the games through player freedom—not shared mechanics or world scale.
Creativity works through echoes, not construction
Zelda’s central tool is the Tri Rod, which lets her create echoes: imitations of objects and creatures she encounters. Once an echo is learned, she can summon it again when a situation calls for it. A bed can become a bridge or a makeshift platform; water blocks can help reach a ledge; a rock can be thrown at an enemy; and a copied monster can fight at Zelda’s side.

That changes the player’s creative question. In Tears of the Kingdom, the familiar verbs include picking up, moving and fusing objects to make things such as vehicles and weapons. In Echoes of Wisdom, the puzzle is more often which learned echo to summon, and how to use it in the space at hand. The games share an invitation to experiment, but the tools—and the resulting solutions—are distinct.
Why Zelda’s role changes the way you play
Nintendo’s developers say the echo-centered design made Zelda a better protagonist for this adventure than Link. If she began with Link’s sword and shield, players could simply fight their way through many encounters rather than engage with the echoes. Zelda initially relies on the system instead, including by using monster echoes as allies.

She does gain access to a temporary swordfighter form, so the game is not built around refusing direct combat altogether. The contrast is that echoes define her basic approach: making use of what the world offers, rather than defaulting to Link’s familiar weapons.
Freedom with enough structure to stay readable
Nintendo says the game contains more than 100 echoes. That is the developers’ stated count, not an independently verified tally. They describe designing echoes with recognizable uses while considering how each would behave in both top-down and side-view scenes, and across different environments.

That consistency matters because a large toolkit can become confusing if every option feels interchangeable—or if players cannot predict what it will do. The developers also considered how echoes might help or hinder the player and tuned their behavior so that solving a problem feels active rather than like waiting for a copied creature to act. Grezzo developer Tomomi Sano summarized the design principle: “Having the freedom to solve puzzles by yourself is a key feature of Legend of Zelda games.”
A new dimension means a different perspective, not a 3D sandbox
The headline’s “new dimension” is figurative. Echoes of Wisdom is a top-down adventure, not a 3D world on the scale of Tears of the Kingdom. Nintendo’s developers describe wanting a top-down Zelda series distinct from the 3D entries; the Switch remake of Link’s Awakening, which Grezzo worked on, helped suggest a modern approach to the format.

The game still has dungeons and boss fights. Nintendo’s developers also said its map is eight times the size of the map in Link’s Awakening; Nintendo did not provide a measurement method in the cited interview, so this is best understood as the developers’ comparison rather than an independently calculated area. Even with that scale, they characterize Echoes of Wisdom as a compact top-down experience next to the vast worlds of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
Producer Eiji Aonuma connected the appeal across formats: “I think that players who played The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom also think of gameplay that provides this level of freedom as having that "Legend of Zelda-like" feeling.” The connection is a shared design value—players inventing their own solutions—not a claim that every Zelda game should offer the same kind of sandbox.

Other systems support Zelda’s adventure
Echoes are the defining system, but Nintendo also lists bind and reverse bond, accessories, smoothies, quests, minigames and Zelda amiibo rewards among the game’s features. The official feature page says Zelda-themed amiibo can provide alternate-color outfits and smoothie ingredients; it does not identify a specific compatible figure list, so check compatibility before choosing an amiibo for these rewards.
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom launched for Nintendo Switch on September 26, 2024, and Nintendo’s feature page lists it as available for the system.
