Rewards labelled Free do not require an upgrade. The paid Battle Pass and optional BlackCell offer add access to more rewards, but each season’s pass expires when the next season begins.
Do you need to buy the Battle Pass?
No. You can claim rewards specifically marked Free without buying a pass. A Base Battle Pass unlocks that season’s premium rewards; a Bundle or BlackCell adds other season-specific benefits. Activision says premium Battle Pass rewards are cosmetic and do not provide gameplay advantages. Because offers and contents can change by season, check the in-game offer before purchasing.

How tokens, pages and rewards work
For premium pass owners, XP earned in public modes in Black Ops 6, Warzone and Warzone Mobile contributes to Battle Pass Tokens. Tokens are used to claim tiers. The pass is arranged in pages: on an unlocked page, you can choose which available reward tier to claim rather than following one fixed reward order.
Unlocking the next page and its High Value Target
In the official description of the BO6 page system, claiming five tiers on a page unlocks the next page. You must claim every tier on a page to complete it and unlock its High Value Target (HVT), often an operator skin or weapon blueprint. Layouts and reward counts may differ between seasons, so these mechanics should not be taken as a promise that every pass has the same number of pages or rewards.

As a historical example, Call of Duty described Season 01’s pass as having 100 in-game rewards across 14 pages. Later seasons used different reward counts: the Season 05 and Season 06 announcements each described over 110 unlockable items excluding BlackCell. Those figures describe those seasons, not a fixed Battle Pass format.
Manual selection or Auto spending
With manual selection, premium pass owners can save tokens in a Token Bank and decide which rewards to claim on pages they have unlocked. Auto spending claims tiers in numerical order as tokens are earned. Free-pass players do not have access to Battle Pass Tokens.

Free, Base, Bundle and BlackCell access
Activision’s support page distinguishes four access states. The prices below are figures stated in official materials for particular seasons, not a guarantee of today’s price or availability.

If you upgrade during a season, Activision says you can claim eligible earlier rewards up to your current page and tier. Its support page also says that upgrading from a previously purchased Base Pass or Bundle to BlackCell returns the 1,100 COD Points paid for the original pass. Check the current in-game terms to confirm what applies to your purchase.

What BlackCell adds
BlackCell is optional; it is not needed to play Black Ops 6 or claim Free rewards. Activision describes it as including Battle Pass access, 20 tokens, an instant rewards page, exclusive operator skins and weapon blueprints, and the ability to start on any page before completing earlier pages. Exact rewards and bonuses change by season. For example, the Season 05 announcement described that season’s BlackCell items and an extra daily challenge; that bonus should not be assumed for another season.

Battle Pass progress and unlocked rewards are tied to your Activision account and are available on platforms linked to that account. COD Points earned through the pass follow a different rule: they can only be spent on the platform where they were unlocked. Linking accounts therefore does not make the earned COD Points wallet fully interchangeable across platforms.

What happens at season end, and can you buy an old pass?
Activision Support states: “The Battle Pass for a specific Season expires when a new Season begins.” The support page also says players cannot buy a previous season’s pass. Any unspent tokens at season end are automatically applied to remaining rewards along a preset path, rather than carried forward for unrestricted use.
The latest Black Ops 6 Battle Pass announcement covered here is for Season 06, published October 7, 2025. A Season 06 announcement in 2026 refers to Black Ops 7, not Black Ops 6. These dated announcements do not establish whether a Black Ops 6 offer is currently available; check the game itself for the present purchase and reward options.

That depends on whether you want the season’s premium cosmetics and expect to earn enough tokens to claim rewards before the pass expires. Compare the actual season’s contents and price shown in-game rather than relying on a previous season’s reward count or BlackCell lineup. Activision’s reviewed materials do not give a general completion-time estimate, so there is no supported number of hours or matches to use as a guarantee.
