That makes nine Netherite ingots, at four ancient debris per ingot. You’ll also need 36 gold ingots and, under the documented Java Edition 1.19.4 rules, nine Netherite Upgrade Smithing Templates.
How the 36 ancient debris adds up
Each ancient debris block smelts into one Netherite scrap. Four scraps combine with four gold ingots to make one Netherite ingot; one ingot upgrades one diamond item at a smithing table. The official Nether Update instructions describe this recipe and upgrade process.

How much debris makes one Netherite ingot?
One Netherite ingot takes four ancient debris, smelted into four Netherite scraps, plus four gold ingots. Since an ingot upgrades one diamond item, multiply the number of items you want to upgrade by four to calculate the ancient debris needed.
- One item: 4 ancient debris
- Four armor pieces: 16 ancient debris
- Five standard tools: 20 ancient debris
- Four armor pieces plus five standard tools: 36 ancient debris
What else do you need to upgrade the gear?
Start with diamond equipment; the ingot is used to upgrade a diamond armor piece, weapon or tool at a smithing table. Each upgrade also needs a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template under the Java Edition 1.19.4 rules. The official Java Edition 1.19.4 update notes establish that template requirement. It is an additional input and does not change the debris count.

What is included in “full armor and tools”?
The 36-debris total means four armor pieces and one each of the five standard tools: sword, pickaxe, axe, shovel and hoe. It does not include duplicate tools or weapons, or horse armor. Add four ancient debris for each additional diamond item you want to upgrade.
