How Salad uses an idle gaming PC
Salad describes its service as a two-sided network: PC owners run the desktop app and make available resources, while businesses send containerized workloads to the network. Salad calls participating users “Chefs” and says they earn rewards when their PCs are idle. Salad’s overview presents this as the company’s description of how its network works.
In practice, you install Salad, sign in, complete the machine setup, review workload preferences and select Chop Now. Setup may require whitelisting Salad in antivirus software and installing Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). Salad’s getting-started guide says the app is intended to run while you are away, with other demanding applications closed.
What kinds of work can run?
Salad may assign different work based on your machine, location and network conditions. The options are not interchangeable: they have different requirements and sources of demand.

Salad says bandwidth work can run alongside container and mining workloads. Its workload explanation describes the available paths and their variability.
Will your gaming PC and internet connection qualify?
Compatibility depends on the workload, not just whether a PC is marketed for gaming. Salad’s requirements can change as workloads and demand change, so check its compatibility guide and the machine assessment in the app before relying on any one specification.

Container workloads
- Salad currently lists newer NVIDIA GPUs for container work and recommends 8 GB of VRAM. Its guide names the RTX 4060 as one example of a supported card; that is a compatibility example, not an earnings guarantee.
- The stated minimum resources are 8 GB of RAM and 70 GB of free storage.
- Salad recommends an internet connection of at least 15 Mbps for both upload and download.
- Older GPUs may sometimes work, but Salad notes that demand for them can be low and variable.
Mining and CPU workloads
For mining, Salad describes support for many recent dedicated GPUs from NVIDIA and AMD, with exceptions. CPU support depends on 64-bit x86 hardware and virtualization. Because eligibility is workload-specific, confirm what the app actually supports on your machine rather than assuming a GPU or processor qualifies for every job.
Bandwidth sharing
Besides the 15 Mbps upload and download guidance, Salad recommends latency below 100 ms. This workload is restricted to eligible regions, so meeting the network targets alone does not establish that bandwidth sharing is available where you live.

How much can you earn?
There is no fixed rate or dependable schedule for container jobs. Salad says earnings depend on GPU or CPU capability, job availability, bandwidth speed, crypto-market conditions when mining is enabled, and how long the app runs. Container work is assigned according to customer demand, so a compatible machine may still spend time without a container job.
Salad’s earning-rate page reports results for the preceding seven days. Its methodology counts all hours a machine was chopping, including hours without a container job; it does not measure only active job time. Salad says the displayed results are from machines averaging at least four hours of chopping per day, exclude projections, and include an average that can be pulled upward by a few high earners. The middle half of machines is presented as a more typical range. Since the figures change with the week, check the live page for current data rather than relying on a number copied elsewhere.

Salad’s overview page also displays company-wide figures of “190+ countries with nodes,” “450,000+ GPUs have contributed compute,” and “$7M+ paid out to GPU owners.” These are figures Salad shows on that page; they are not independently audited statistics or a guarantee of what a particular user will earn.
How to get started
- Download the Salad desktop app from Salad’s website and sign in to an account.
- Complete the in-app machine setup. Follow any prompts for antivirus allowlisting or WSL, then review the machine’s compatibility assessment.
- Check workload preferences and settings, including which kinds of work you want the app to consider.
- Close other demanding applications if you plan to leave Salad running, then select Chop Now.
- Check the app’s activity and balance over time. Work availability can vary, so an idle interval without a container job does not necessarily mean setup failed.
What can you redeem Salad Balance for?
Salad describes Balance as a reward balance for its storefront. Its redemption guide lists gift cards, game codes, subscriptions, PayPal and prepaid Visa or Mastercard options; availability and regional restrictions apply. The getting-started guide gives Amazon gift cards as one example. Confirm that a reward is listed for your region before spending balance: Salad says completed reward purchases are not refundable.

Should you leave Salad running or upgrade your PC?
Using a PC you already own while it would otherwise be idle may make sense if you are comfortable sharing its resources and understand that work and rewards fluctuate. Salad says hardware capability affects earnings, but demand also changes; the available information does not establish a reliable payback period for buying a GPU or other hardware just to earn rewards.
Any personal estimate would also need to account for electricity use and price, how long the machine runs, and your tax circumstances. The published workload and earnings information does not provide a net-earnings calculation for an individual setup. Avoid treating a displayed earning rate as profit without accounting for those costs.
