In an October 2024 interview, Sega executives also framed Sonic as a model for keeping a franchise active across games and other media. The game was then expected in winter 2024; Sega later announced its global launch on November 5, 2025.
Why Sega made Sonic Rumble
In an edited GamesBeat interview published October 6, 2024, reporter Dean Takahashi spoke with Takashi Iizuka, identified as head of the Sonic franchise at Sega, and Makoto Tase, identified as game director on Sonic Rumble. The conversation followed a Tokyo Game Show visit and a pre-release hands-on session; the interview’s observations are the reporter’s, not independent testing.
Iizuka said Sega already had Sonic mobile games such as Sonic Forces and Sonic Dash, but Sega Japan wanted its own development team to create a mobile title using Sonic. He summed up the motivation: “We wanted to use the Sega Japan dev team to create a game using Sonic.” Read the GamesBeat interview.
What makes its party-game design Sonic?
Tase said the team started by asking how to make the game feel recognizably Sonic. The elements he named were speed, varied stages, familiar characters and the wider Sonic world. Rather than simply transplanting a generic obstacle-course format onto mobile, the goal was to make those franchise traits part of the party-game experience.

Rings and competition
Collecting rings and taking them from other players were part of the competition Tase described. The interview compared the concept with games such as Fall Guys and Stumble Guys, but the useful distinction is the design emphasis: Sonic characters and stages, speed, and ring-based rivalry. It does not establish a current feature-by-feature comparison with those games.
Comebacks and a wider audience
Tase said random and comeback elements were meant to keep matches enjoyable for players who make mistakes, rather than making skill the only deciding factor. That is the developers’ design intention, not evidence that the mechanics produce a particular measured result. He described the aim as having “more of a party aspect.”

Mobile and PC play
During development, Tase said the team expected PC and mobile players to share games. He acknowledged that a controller might make play easier, while explaining that the team wanted party competition in which skill was not the only factor. Those remarks reflect expectations at the time of the interview, not a definitive technical specification for the launched game.
How Sonic fits Sega’s wider franchise strategy
Iizuka described Sonic’s games, animation, movies and comics as coordinated ways to keep fans interested between major releases. He said Sega was using Sonic as an example as it pursued similar strategies with other intellectual property, calling the brand “the transmedia strategy for the whole company.” That is his account of Sega’s approach, not proof of a specific commercial outcome.

Iizuka also said Sega’s aim for consumer titles was one new title each year, with other media helping fill the gaps during the year. This was a target he described in the October 2024 interview, not a guarantee that every subsequent year would follow that schedule.
The interview also cited Rovio’s mobile-game experience as an influence on accessibility and worldwide marketing; Tase said the team took that experience into account. Iizuka spoke positively about a past Sonic and Angry Birds cross-promotion and said Sega would welcome another opportunity. Neither remark establishes a current collaboration or partnership.

From the winter 2024 plan to the global launch
The interview described Sonic Rumble as upcoming, with Iizuka expecting a winter 2024 launch. The team also discussed plans for 35 stages before global launch, more at launch, and new content every few weeks. Those were forecasts and development plans from 2024, not verified descriptions of the live game today.
Sega’s official announcement says Sonic Rumble launched worldwide on November 5, 2025. The launch announcement lists iOS, Android, Google Play Games and Steam, and describes matches of up to 32 players, including obstacle courses and survival stages. It names Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Shadow, and mentions skins, emotes and character progression. See Sega’s global launch announcement.

What the interview establishes—and what it doesn’t
The interview offers a clear account of Sega’s stated purpose and the developers’ design intentions: give Sega Japan a Sonic mobile project, make the party format feel like Sonic, and use the franchise across media to maintain audience interest between game releases. The later Sega announcement establishes the launch date and platform list.
Those sources do not establish a current player count, revenue, retention rate or independently tested performance result. Nor do the 2024 remarks establish that every planned content cadence or cross-platform detail matches the live service today. For those questions, the interview’s development-era expectations should not be mistaken for current measurements or a complete technical specification.
