If you mean Overwatch’s Top 500 Challenger leaderboard, each leaderboard has 500 player slots. That is not a count of games or matches, and it is not one sitewide total: boards are divided by region, role and mode. If you meant a different game’s “Top 500,” the answer depends on that game.
What does “Top 500” count in Overwatch?
Blizzard describes the former Top 500 leaderboard system as the Challenger Tier. Each board displays the 500 players with the highest Challenger Score. The number refers to players listed on an individual leaderboard, not to the number of games played.
Overwatch has separate leaderboards by region and role, as well as a Combined board. Season 20 also includes Stadium boards and an Open Queue board. Because a player can appear on more than one board, adding the slots across boards would not tell you how many distinct people are listed. Blizzard does not give a total unique-player count across all boards in its Season 20 overview.
How many matches do you need to qualify?
Leaderboard size and eligibility are separate. For Season 20, Blizzard says Stadium competitors need 25 wins to qualify; other Competitive modes no longer require 50 seasonal wins. Eligibility also requires completing the Seasoned Competitor lifetime challenge and having Endorsement Level 2 or higher. These requirements do not change the 500 slots on each board. Seasoned Competitor challenge
Blizzard’s October 2024 patch notes set the Seasoned Competitor challenge requirement beginning in Season 12; the challenge requires 750 lifetime Competitive wins. Eligibility rules have changed over time, so use the current season’s mode-specific guidance rather than assuming an older seasonal match requirement still applies. The change is documented in Blizzard’s October 2024 patch notes.
