Hollow Knight: Silksong launched on September 4, 2025, amid reports of purchase and access problems on Steam, Nintendo eShop, Xbox Store and PlayStation Store. The timing and scale of the rush point to launch-day demand as a likely factor, but the available reporting does not establish that fans alone caused each storefront problem.
What happened when Silksong launched?
Silksong went on sale on September 4, 2025. Players trying to reach store pages, complete purchases or download the game reported trouble across multiple platforms. Engadget described problems on Steam, Nintendo eShop and Xbox Store, while WIRED also reported loading and purchasing difficulties on PlayStation Store. These were contemporaneous reports of problems users encountered, not confirmation that every service was completely unavailable to everyone.
The launch had been heavily anticipated. Before release, Xbox Wire announced the game for Cloud, Console and PC on September 4, with day-one access for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers: Xbox Wire’s availability announcement.

What eShop errors did players see?
Nintendo Life recorded error code 2811-7002 for some users unable to reach the eShop page and 2813-1409 for some users who got as far as payment. Its later updates that afternoon said purchases and downloads were beginning to work and that the situation was calming. That recovery report applies to the eShop observations; it does not establish one outage duration for every platform.

Did fans actually bring the stores down?
The headline phrase captures the apparent launch-day rush, but it is stronger than the confirmed evidence. Engadget said the timing of storefront problems alongside the release could have been coincidence, though it considered a connection probable. WIRED likewise reported difficulties during the surge. The available coverage supports a temporary disruption coinciding with high demand; it does not include a platform-authored incident report confirming the precise cause or showing that fans alone brought down each service.
Team Cherry’s launch-day message, quoted by Nintendo Life, announced that the game was available on all platforms, including day one on Xbox Game Pass. That announcement helps explain why players arrived across several storefronts at once, but does not identify the technical cause of any store issue.

How many people bought Silksong?
In a December 15, 2025 update, developer Team Cherry said more than seven million people had purchased Silksong, with millions more playing through Xbox Game Pass. These are the developer’s dated figures, not a current sales total. The separate figure of more than 100,000 concurrent Steam players reported by WIRED on launch day measures simultaneous players at that moment, not copies sold.
