How to Ride a Horse in First Person in Skyrim

In vanilla Skyrim horseback riding is third person. For Skyrim Special Edition on PC, install First Person Horse Riding and its required SKSE, then toggle the mounted camera with F by default.

In unmodded Skyrim, horseback riding is locked to third-person view. On PC with Skyrim Special Edition, you can add a first-person mounted camera with the First Person Horse Riding mod and its required Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE). Once installed, mount a horse and press F by default to toggle the camera. The mod author’s page lists requirements and controls.

What you need

This method is documented for Skyrim Special Edition on PC. The mod page lists SKSE 2.0.6 Alpha or higher as a requirement, and the page identifies the mod as version 2.0, updated August 28, 2018. Check the page for compatibility with your current game and SKSE build before installing. First Person Horse Riding mod

Install and use the mounted camera

  1. Install SKSE for the compatible game build, following its installation instructions.
  2. Install First Person Horse Riding with a mod manager, or manually copy its files into the game’s Data folder, as described by the mod author. Mod files and installation information
  3. Approach a horse and press E to mount it. Press E again while riding to dismount, according to the Skyrim PC manual. Skyrim PC manual
  4. While mounted, press F, the mod’s default mounted-camera hotkey, to switch into first person. Press it again to return to third person.
  5. Use the mod’s MCM menu to change the hotkey or assign a gamepad button if needed.

Why F alone does not work in vanilla Skyrim

Bethesda lists F as the default PC point-of-view key and says the mouse wheel can also change the view; the controls scheme menu shows the current bindings. Bethesda’s PC camera controls guidance describes ordinary view controls, not a vanilla first-person horseback option. The mounted first-person camera is the feature supplied by the mod.

Camera behavior and troubleshooting

The mod author says the mounted camera locks to first person and hides the player character. Pressing the hotkey toggles back to third person, and dismounting automatically restores the view used before mounting. These are behaviors described by the author, rather than independently verified results. Mod documentation
