What “access” means depends on the pack: most content appears through exploration or an update, while The Grimm Troupe has a specific start trigger—light the Nightmare Lantern.
Do you need to download or buy Hollow Knight DLC?
No separate purchase is needed for the four gameplay packs. Nintendo’s official Switch listing says the game includes all four, Team Cherry says they are built into the PlayStation and Xbox Voidheart Edition, and Steam describes gameplay from the free expansions as already in the base game. Hidden Dreams
Hidden Dreams adds two boss encounters, the Dream Gate travel ability, and a hidden Stag Station. Team Cherry says its content can be accessed at any point in a run, whether you are beginning a new game or returning to finish things. It is integrated into the game rather than selected from a separate DLC menu. The Grimm Troupe
To begin The Grimm Troupe, find and light the Nightmare Lantern. Team Cherry identifies that as the action that summons the Troupe to Hallownest. The free quest adds boss fights, charms, enemies, and more, and is not restricted to the post-game. The announcement does not give a complete route to the lantern, so it is safer to use the in-game map and exploration than to assume a specific location from this instruction alone. Lifeblood
Lifeblood is primarily a free game update, not a separate quest chain to install from a DLC menu. Team Cherry’s feature list includes a new boss and music, an upgraded boss, custom map markers, balance changes, bug fixes, additional sounds, and performance work. Its announcement said Steam and GOG Galaxy users update automatically; it also described a manual updated-build note for Humble and GOG DRM-free users at the time. For current installation, update Hollow Knight through the platform’s library or store and check the version shown on the title screen. The announcement does not establish a route to the new boss. Godmaster
Godmaster is the fourth free content pack and is included among the packs named on Nintendo’s listing. It adds characters, quests, secrets, and some of the game’s most challenging content. Its content is found in-game; the official pages cited here do not establish a precise entrance route or prerequisites, so this guide does not invent a step-by-step path. If a pack does not seem to be available
- Update Hollow Knight from your platform’s game library or store, then check the version displayed on the title screen. Platform menus differ, and there is no single current update path established for every platform.
- For The Grimm Troupe, look for the Nightmare Lantern and light it; simply owning the game does not summon the Troupe without this trigger.
- For Hidden Dreams and Godmaster, continue exploring for their in-game content rather than searching for a separate DLC download or menu.
- If you are on PC, check the game’s store/library page for available updates. Team Cherry’s historical announcement specifically described automatic updates for Steam and GOG Galaxy; current platform behavior may vary.
