In a Java Edition example, average Blaze Rod drops rise from 0.50 per kill with no Looting to 2.00 with Looting III—four times the baseline average. That is an average across kills, not a promise that every Blaze will drop four rods.
How much does Looting III increase drops?
The effect depends on the mob and the particular item in its loot table. Compare the same drop with and without the enchantment rather than assuming Looting III multiplies every drop by the same amount.

Java Edition examples
| Mob drop | No Looting: average per kill | Looting III: average per kill | Change in average |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blaze Rods | 0.50 | 2.00 | 4× the baseline average; 300% more |
| Guardian prismarine shards | 1.00 | 2.50 | 2.5× the baseline average; 150% more |
| Guardian prismarine crystals | 0.40 | 1.00 | 2.5× the baseline average; 150% more |
These are Java Edition figures reported in the Minecraft Wiki drop-source comparison for Blaze Rods and its guardian drop table. The Blaze Rod table also lists averages of 1.00 with Looting I and 1.50 with Looting II. Its displayed maximum rises from one rod without Looting to four with Looting III.
Does Looting III guarantee more items on each kill?
No. An average describes results across many kills; an individual kill can still produce less than the average or no item where the drop is chance-based. Looting improves the outcome described by the relevant drop table, but it does not guarantee a particular item on every kill.

What does Looting affect?
Looting is a sword enchantment that increases the chances of obtaining good loot when mobs are killed, according to Microsoft Learn’s enchantment guide. It concerns mob drops, not mining drops. Microsoft Learn lists Fortune separately as an enchantment that increases block drops.
Do these numbers apply to Bedrock Edition?
Do not assume the Java examples give Bedrock’s exact rates. The figures above are Java Edition table values; Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock loot-table documentation explains that the looting_enchant function modifies the count returned when an entity is killed using an item with Looting, and is limited to loot tables called by entity death. It does not give the same comparative rates for every vanilla mob. The cited reference tables do not establish a specific current game version, so treat the examples as edition-specific rather than patch-verified rates.

When is Looting III worth using?
It is most useful when you are farming a drop whose loot table benefits substantially from Looting, such as the Blaze Rod example. For an item you need in bulk, the higher average can mean fewer kills over time, though chance and per-kill variation remain. For a precise comparison, check the same mob and item in the loot table for your edition and version.

Microsoft Learn says players can enchant items at an enchanting table, obtain enchanted books from librarian villagers, or combine items and books using an anvil. Looting is listed as a sword enchantment.
