For most melee builds using a weapon that scales with Dexterity, 40 Dexterity is a practical target. Meet your weapon’s requirement first, then check its scaling and infusion before spending levels beyond 40. Sharp-infused weapons are a notable exception: a community reference describes weaker gains from 40 to 60, stronger gains from 60 to about 80, and diminishing returns beyond that range.
How to choose your Dexterity target
- Meet the weapon’s requirement. Requirements vary by weapon. Using one below its Dexterity requirement can incur a physical-damage penalty; the Onikiri and Ubadachi reference documents this for that weapon. Check the requirements for the specific weapon you plan to use.
- Check whether the weapon benefits from Dexterity. Dexterity raises damage for weapons with Dexterity scaling, but the amount depends on the weapon and its infusion. The scaling reference describes scaling modifiers as varying with the stat and infusion.
- Use 40 as a general stopping point. The Dark Souls Wiki’s Dexterity page identifies 40 as a soft cap and reports that ordinary Dexterity-focused and quality setups generally see weapon attack-rating returns taper around there. Treat it as a useful benchmark, not a fixed rule for every weapon.
- Consider more only if your weapon supports it. For Sharp-infused weapons, that same reference reports relatively poor gains between 40 and 60 Dexterity, stronger gains from 60 to roughly 80, and diminishing returns beyond that. The value of those extra levels depends on your weapon, upgrade state, and build.
Why the weapon matters more than the number alone
Weapons display scaling grades from E at the weak end through S at the strong end, but a letter is only a rough guide. Two weapons with the same displayed grade can still gain different amounts of damage from Dexterity. The Parameter Bonus reference notes that scaling letters are approximate, so do not assume matching grades mean matching returns.

When comparing weapons or deciding whether to level past 40, check the weapon’s Dexterity requirement, scaling behavior, infusion, and the actual attack-rating change at your proposed stat level. The available references do not establish one damage curve that applies to every weapon; exact returns should be checked for the specific weapon and upgrade state.
Should you stop at 40 or go higher?
- Stop around 40: A sensible default for a typical melee build when your weapon scales with Dexterity and you want to invest levels elsewhere.
- Go higher selectively: Consider it when you are using a Sharp-infused weapon and its actual attack-rating gains justify the investment, especially in the 60-to-about-80 range described by the community reference.
- Do not level for scaling that is not there: If your chosen weapon does not benefit meaningfully from Dexterity, prioritize its requirements and other relevant stats instead.
The cap pattern above is reported by a community-maintained reference, not an official developer statement; its description associates the caps with Regulation 1.32. It should be read as a practical guide to weapon damage, not a promise of identical results across the arsenal.
