Augur’s Everdark Sovereign is Maris, Fathom of Night. The key to beating its airborne second phase is the Storm Ruler weapon skill: use it to damage Maris, and destroy the floating laser orbs when they appear to stagger the boss and open an attack window. The phase tactics below come from PC Gamer’s guide published July 31, 2025; check the regulation version shown in your game because balance or encounter details may change.
Check that the Sovereign encounter is available
Everdark Sovereigns are harder versions of Nightlords, with new moves and increased power, and appear as limited-time online-mode content. Bandai Namco announced Maris, Fathom of Night, as Augur’s Sovereign, awakening on July 31, 2025. The publisher says you must defeat the original Nightlord before challenging its Sovereign. These appearances rotate, so check the game rather than assuming Maris is currently available. Solo play is possible in online mode. How to get Storm Ruler
According to PC Gamer’s July 31, 2025 guide, the encounter begins with a fight against regular Maris. Defeating this first phase leads to a reward selection that includes a legendary version of your weapon with the Storm Ruler skill. Select it: the guide identifies Storm Ruler as the essential tool for damaging the larger airborne Maris in the next phase. Read PC Gamer’s Augur guide.
How to damage airborne Maris
- Enter Storm Ruler’s charging stance. Wait for the wind effect to gather before releasing the charged attack.
- Time the release for a lower pass. The charged attack is easier to land when Maris is closer to the ground. If that timing is difficult, use Storm Ruler’s stance light attacks instead.
- Keep contributing between openings. PC Gamer’s guide says charging restores FP. It also says each player receives a Storm Ruler weapon, so teammates can attack with the same skill. If you are playing cooperatively, tell the group to use Storm Ruler and coordinate around Maris’s lower passes.
Storm Ruler’s balance has changed since the encounter appeared. Bandai Namco’s official version 1.02.1 patch notes say the storm effect charges faster, the unleashed blade travels faster, and uncharged attacks deal more damage. See the version 1.02.1 patch notes.

What to do when Maris summons the laser orbs
PC Gamer’s guide reports that floating orbs appear around half health and fire lasers. Target the orbs with Storm Ruler and destroy them; doing so stuns Maris and creates a chance to attack the boss. The guide recommends stance light attacks for this job because the orbs have little health. Prioritize clearing the orbs rather than continuing to attack Maris while they are active.
Survive the Sovereign’s enhanced attacks
Maris’s Sovereign form has additional, stronger attack patterns than the original Nightlord. PC Gamer’s guide discusses enhanced waves and other attacks, but treat its attack-specific descriptions as guidance rather than guaranteed outcomes. Read each tell and adapt your dodge, jump, and position to the attack you see; avoid assuming one response will work every time.

If you are preparing with a group, the official Nightreign guide recommends learning character abilities and practicing in the training ground. The official version 1.02.1 notes also document a fix for a bug where some attacks by Everdark Sovereign Maris caused stagger damage when negated with Executor’s skill.

Bandai Namco’s news index lists version 1.03.2, dated January 15, 2026, and a March 31, 2026 hotfix. The consulted update pages do not describe a later Augur-specific change to Storm Ruler or the core encounter mechanic; that does not establish that no subsequent regulation change exists.
