You can change your Steam store country if you have moved or are living abroad for an extended period. Steam’s stated process is to make your first purchase after the move with a payment method from your new country, then select the country-change option when Steam offers it in your cart or at checkout. Changing regions just to get lower prices is not permitted: Valve prohibits disguising your residence to buy at prices that do not apply to your geography.
How to change your Steam store country after moving
Steam Support describes a country change for someone who has moved or is living abroad for an extended period. It is not a setting for choosing whichever country has the lowest price. Steam Support’s country-change instructions say the process is tied to a purchase made with a payment method from the new country.
- Move or live abroad for an extended period. The process is intended for a genuine change in where you live, not a temporary switch to shop another store.
- Start your first purchase after the move. Use a payment method from your new country.
- Choose the country-change option when Steam offers it. If Steam detects that your current location differs from your account’s store country, the option appears while viewing your cart or completing checkout.
- If it does not work, follow Steam Support’s current instructions or contact Support. Do not use a VPN or proxy to simulate living in the new country.
Steam’s cited instructions do not establish that wallet codes, gift cards, or third-party services can replace a payment method from the new country. Do not rely on them as a workaround.
Can you change region just to get games cheaper?
No. Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement, shown as revised September 10, 2026, prohibits disguising your residence to get prices that do not apply to your geography. It states: “You agree that you will not use IP proxying or other methods to disguise the place of your residence, whether to circumvent geographical restrictions on game content, to order or purchase at pricing not applicable to your geography, or for any other purpose. If you do this, Valve may terminate your access to your Account.”

That rule covers VPNs, proxies, and other methods of concealing where you live when used to bypass regional pricing or content restrictions. A VPN is not a supported way to change your store country.
Will another Steam region actually be cheaper?
There is no guaranteed cheapest country or universal saving. Developers set their own game prices, and prices vary by title and currency. Valve Steamworks documentation says Steam’s pricing system covers 37 currencies across four region groups; its conversion tool uses exchange-rate, purchasing-power, and multi-variable methods, with public data current as of January 2026. Valve’s Steamworks pricing documentation explains those options.
A SteamDB report dated March 31, 2026, described Valve’s March pricing-conversion update and compared its three methods. At the $59.99 base-price tier, the report’s suggested euro prices ranged from €42.99 using purchasing-power conversion to €61.99 using the multi-variable method. These are illustrative conversion recommendations—not live prices for every game. Developers may choose different prices. SteamDB’s March 2026 analysis provides the examples.
If you have genuinely moved, assess a particular game in your new store rather than assuming the whole catalog will be cheaper. Consider its listed price, your payment provider’s currency-conversion costs, applicable taxes, and whether the game is available to you in that region.

What happens to game access and regional restrictions?
A store-country change does not guarantee access to every game or remove a product’s regional restriction. Availability rules are title-specific, and Steam Support notes that the countries included in a region can change. For a restricted product, Support advises purchasing from your current location without a VPN or proxy, or obtaining a copy sold within your country of residence. This is a specific troubleshooting case, not a general rule for every checkout problem. For the wallet currency-mismatch error, Steam Support says that if you are outside your home country, retry using the payment instrument only—such as a credit card or PayPal—instead of the Steam Wallet. The same page warns against using another region’s store to bypass regional pricing or content restrictions. Follow Steam Support’s instructions for the currency-mismatch error for that error specifically.
