What counts as a boss summoning material?
For Lair Bosses, the relevant items are keys used to open a boss’s Hoard. Blizzard’s 2.2 rework changed the sequence: players summoned and defeated the boss first, then each player spent their own Hoard Keys to open their reward Hoard. That is useful historical context, not confirmation that every detail remains unchanged in the current version.

The 2.2 notes grouped bosses into three key tiers. They gave costs by tier, rather than a separate cost for each boss:

Where Blizzard documented farming boss keys
In its 2.2-era adjustments, Blizzard described increased sources for particular materials. The table separates those specific historical routes from claims about what is confirmed now.

Living Steel: Helltide chests
If the live interface calls for Living Steel, Helltide chests are the documented 2.2-era activity to check. The source is tied to Blizzard’s 2.2 adjustments; it should not be read as a promise about current quantity, chest type, or drop rate.

Distilled Fear: Nightmare Dungeons
Nightmare Dungeons were Blizzard’s documented boosted source for Distilled Fear in the 2.2-era update. The available information does not establish a current-season dungeon tier, route, or fastest farming method.
Exquisite Blood: three activity types
The 2.2-era list includes the Blood Maiden, Legion Events, and World Bosses. These are three distinct activities rather than a stated rotation or ranking. Choose among them based on what is available in your game and the material currently requested by the boss interface.

Superior Lair Keys: verify the cache route in-game
Blizzard’s 2026 Season of Death Awakening update announced a future addition of Superior Lair Keys to the repeatable Glints of Hope cache. Because the announcement does not confirm implementation or enumerate all live sources, inspect the cache rewards and your current key inventory before planning a farming session around it.

The 2.2 system changed both the reward-opening sequence and the key costs by tier. Under that design, a group could defeat a boss, but each player paid keys individually to open their own Hoard; defeating the boss did not itself consume the player’s key at summon time. Older guides that describe a different key cost or say the key is consumed when summoning may reflect another version of the game.

The most recently opened official patch page in the available information is build 3.2.2, dated September 30, 2026. It does not settle the full current boss-material table. For exact costs, use the live boss or Hoard interface rather than carrying forward the historical 2.2 counts.
Do not confuse Cube materials with boss keys
The Lord of Hatred preview names Elite Monsters, Cube Spoils from War Plans, Undercity Tributes, and Whisper Caches as sources of general Horadric Cube crafting materials. Those are not automatically sources of Lair Boss Hoard keys. Treat them as separate systems unless the current in-game interface explicitly identifies a Cube material as a boss key.

A practical check before you farm
- Open the relevant boss or Hoard interface. Confirm the boss’s current key name, required quantity, and any difficulty or ownership condition shown there.
- Match the key to a documented route. Use Helltide chests for the historical Living Steel route, Nightmare Dungeons for Distilled Fear, and Blood Maiden, Legion Events, or World Bosses for Exquisite Blood—but verify current availability in-game.
- Check any newer cache reward directly. In particular, confirm whether Glints of Hope currently lists Superior Lair Keys before farming it for that purpose.
- Recheck after a major patch or season change. The 2.2 counts and boosted-source notes are historical context, not a current-season guarantee.
