Where coral reefs generate
Coral generates naturally in parts of warm ocean biomes called coral reefs, according to Minecraft’s guide to warm oceans. The key distinction is that a warm ocean is the habitat; a coral reef is a feature that may occur there.

Look for a sandy ocean floor dotted with seagrass. Sea pickles may also appear on the ocean floor. These clues can help you recognize a warm-ocean area, but they do not confirm that a reef is nearby.
How to search for a reef
- Travel across ocean territory and prioritize areas with warm-ocean clues, especially sandy seabeds and seagrass.
- Look down through the water and scan the seafloor for a vivid, raised formation of coral.
- If you find the warm-ocean habitat but no reef, continue exploring another stretch of warm ocean. Minecraft’s guidance describes finding a reef as a matter of luck, not a guarantee.
What a Minecraft coral reef looks like
A reef stands out as a bright concentration of coral against the seabed. It rises above the ocean floor and can make the water shallower where it grows. Look for coral blocks and coral fans; seagrass and sea pickles may be present too. Minecraft’s warm-ocean guide describes reefs by their bright colours and plentiful coral.

Finding coral versus collecting it
Locating a reef does not mean you can collect its coral with any tool. Minecraft’s coral guide says a tool enchanted with Silk Touch is needed to collect coral. Coral also needs water to survive, so keep it in water if you want it to remain alive.
