The most direct place to start is an Emergency Cartographic Data distress chart: activate one to mark a distress site, then check what you find. Other options are solving a Transmission Tower puzzle, scanning with Exocraft radar, or searching underwater with a Nautilon. None guarantees a claimable ship—some sites lead to a crashed freighter, an empty wreck, or a stranded pilot instead.
Which search method should you use?

Find a distress site with a chart
- Obtain an Emergency Cartographic Data distress chart.
- Activate the chart to mark a distress point of interest.
- Travel to the marker and inspect the site. If it is not a claimable ship, use another chart or switch to a different search method.
This is a simple route to try first, but a distress marker identifies a site—not a promise that a ship is waiting there. [TheGamer]
Use a Transmission Tower to get a waypoint
- Find a Transmission Tower while exploring, or use an inhabited-outpost chart to locate one.
- Interact with the tower’s terminal and solve its number-sequence puzzle.
- Follow the waypoint it provides, then check whether the destination is a crashed ship or a crashed freighter.
A tower can point you to either kind of wreck, so this method is not specific to claimable starships. [No Man’s Sky Wiki]
Search with Exocraft or underwater with a Nautilon
Exocraft radar is another way to look for crashed ships. For underwater wrecks, use the Nautilon search method. These are alternatives to charting or solving a tower puzzle; the available references do not establish exact scan ranges, costs, or guaranteed outcomes. [TheGamer]

Check whether the wreck is claimable
Reaching a distress site does not mean you can take the ship. The site may be empty because the ship has already been removed, or a stranded pilot may be there. You can help a stranded pilot repair their ship so they can leave, but you cannot claim that pilot’s ship. [No Man’s Sky Wiki]

If you claim a crashed ship and want to leave in it, repair its Launch Thruster and Pulse Engine. Other damaged technology can remain unrepaired if your immediate goal is simply to fly away; those systems do not repair themselves automatically. [TheGamer]
