The safest way to beat the Blackgaol Knight is to sprint sideways through its opening crossbow barrage, close in while it reloads, land one or two quick attacks, then retreat and recover stamina. The Knight is an optional encounter in the Western Nameless Mausoleum in Gravesite Plain; patient dodges and short punish windows are more reliable than trading hits.
Where to find the Blackgaol Knight
The Blackgaol Knight waits in the Western Nameless Mausoleum in Gravesite Plain. From the Scorched Ruins Site of Grace, travel west toward the dead trees and glowing worms; the entrance is at the back of that area. The fight is optional, not a main story boss.
How to handle the fight
Evade the opening crossbow barrage
Lock on if it helps you keep track of the Knight. As you enter, sprint in a lateral arc rather than straight toward it. Once the final bolts have passed, move in during its reload and take a brief opening. Push Square, EIP Gaming and GamesRadar+ all describe this opening recovery as a chance to close distance and attack.
Use short punish windows
The Knight’s greatsword hits hard, and its combos can continue beyond the first swing. Bait a committed attack, evade, block or parry it, then counter with one reliable hit. Add a second quick attack only when the opening is clear. Back away before your stamina runs low; avoid long heavy follow-ups, particularly after knocking the Knight down, because it can roll away and counter.

When the Knight raises its greatsword overhead with both hands and slams it down, a wind-like slash travels forward. Roll or move sideways to avoid the wave. At close range, watch for a delayed spinning slash afterward; dodge that follow-up before attacking during recovery.
Respect jumps and ordinary combos
The jump attacks are telegraphed. Dodge near the moment of impact or block if that is safer for your build. A well-timed vertical hit can knock the Knight out of the air, but it may roll away and counter as soon as it lands. Do not assume a sword combo is over after its first strike.
Decide whether to interrupt the heal
At around half health, the Knight drinks from a Crimson Flask and restores health. The guides report that it can do this only once. You can try to interrupt the drink with an immediate attack, but the opening is tight; treat a successful interruption as a bonus, not a requirement.
Choose a melee or ranged approach
| Approach | How to use it | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Melee | Stay close enough to limit crossbow use, bait a sword attack, evade, block or parry, then land a short punish and reset. | Closing distance reduces crossbow pressure but leaves you exposed to sword combos and the close-range spin. |
| Ranged | Keep moving laterally, evade the bolts, and attack after the crossbow barrage or sword-wave recovery. | The ranged attacks are easier to read at distance, but you still need to avoid the bolts and maintain space from the spin follow-up. |
EIP Gaming describes shields and parries as viable options; a successful parry can open a critical attack. Choose them only if you are comfortable with the timing. A cautious dodge-and-punish loop is a sound alternative.

Prepare without relying on a fixed level
If repeated attempts are going poorly, consider collecting Scadutree Fragments. Push Square says these strengthen attack power and damage negation in the Realm of Shadow. Push Square’s guide lists level 150 as a recommendation, not a game requirement, and the other cited guides do not establish a universal level threshold.
Defeating the Knight awards 70,000 runes according to Push Square’s guide, displayed as published on August 26, 2026. The listed equipment rewards are the Greatsword of Solitude, Helm of Solitude, Armor of Solitude, Gauntlets of Solitude and Greaves of Solitude.

Do not assume lightning is the optimal damage type. A Game8 search-result snippet labels lightning a weakness, but that claim was not independently verified in the cited guides, and no damage ranking or test method is established here.
