To insert a character model into a place, open Studio’s Avatar or Home tab, choose Character, select a rig and insert it. To make a custom model the character players use when they spawn, name the model StarterCharacter and place it under StarterPlayer. These are different workflows: inserting a rig adds a model to the place, while StarterCharacter sets the character model for players.
Choose how you want to add the character

How do I add a character in Roblox Studio?
- Open the Avatar or Home tab.
- Click Character to open the Rig Generator.
- Choose an available rig, then select its body shape and style options.
- Insert it. The model appears in the 3D viewport and Explorer.
The Rig Generator supports legacy R6 and R15 rigs and can insert a rig based on your account avatar, including its customizations and accessories. Choose the rig for your intended clothing and movement: Roblox says layerable clothing and accessories can only be equipped to R15 models. See the Rig Generator guide.
How do I make my character spawn in Roblox Studio?
To make a supplied model the character that players spawn as, use the StarterCharacter model route—not just a rig inserted into Workspace.
- Place the finished character Model in the place.
- In Explorer, rename it
StarterCharacter. - Drag it under the
StarterPlayerservice. If there is already aStarterCharacterthere, remove or replace it as appropriate. - Playtest the experience to check the spawn.
Roblox’s StarterPlayer reference specifies that a Model named StarterCharacter under that service is used as the character model for all players; Roblox’s character testing guidance describes the naming and placement workflow.

How do I add my avatar to Roblox Studio?
If you want to inspect or edit a rig based on your own Roblox account avatar, use the Rig Generator’s account-avatar option. This inserts a model into the place for editing; it does not by itself make the avatar model the spawn character for every player. For that behavior, follow the StarterCharacter steps above.
If the goal is for players to appear as their own Roblox avatars, leave the normal automatic character loading behavior enabled. Roblox documents that a player’s Character represents their platform avatar by default and that automatic loading is enabled by default.

How do I import my own character into Roblox Studio?
- On the Home tab, click Import to open Studio’s 3D Importer.
- Select your character file, such as an .fbx or .gltf model, and review the preview and any importer checks.
- To test the imported model as the player character, make it a Model named
StarterCharacterunderStarterPlayer, then playtest.
Importing a 3D model and making an avatar-ready character are separate things. Roblox notes that avatar-ready bodies must meet its character body specifications; an imported file is not automatically compliant for avatar use or sale. See Roblox’s character body import guide.
Where should character scripts go?
Put instances that should be parented to each player’s character when it spawns in StarterPlayer > StarterCharacterScripts. Roblox says these instances do not persist on that character after it respawns. Scripts intended to run once for each player belong in StarterPlayerScripts instead. See the StarterCharacterScripts reference. These container rules describe where instances go; they are not a code example or a guarantee that a script is suitable for every character.

How do Avatar Settings differ from adding a character?
Studio’s Avatar Settings window controls appearance and behavior defaults for user avatars across the game. It is a game-wide configuration, not a way to insert a one-off rig or supply a custom StarterCharacter. Roblox recommends previewing and playtesting the experience before publishing changes.
