No—not anymore. XDefiant’s online service has shut down, so players can no longer unlock characters through normal gameplay. Ubisoft ended new downloads, player registrations, and purchases on December 3, 2024; the publisher later shut down the game’s service in June 2025.
Why XDefiant characters can no longer be unlocked
XDefiant was an online game, and its character unlocks depended on access to the game’s live service. Ubisoft announced on December 3, 2024, that new downloads, registrations, and purchases would stop immediately. The company said servers would remain active until June 3, 2025, but Ubisoft’s service listing records XDefiant as shut down on June 4, 2025. Those are two distinct official dates: the announced final day for servers and the shutdown date shown in the service listing. Ubisoft’s discontinuation announcement and Ubisoft’s service listing document the change.

As a result, reinstalling the game, purchasing a Founder’s Pack, or looking for an old challenge does not provide a working route to unlock characters. The official information establishes that the service ended; it does not identify a workaround that restores access.
How character unlocks worked before shutdown
When XDefiant was active, Ubisoft said locked factions and characters could be earned by completing in-game missions. Its launch article explained the broad approach, while the starter guide described unlocking DedSec through in-game challenges. The guidance was general, not a verified checklist of every character’s individual requirement. Ubisoft’s launch article and Ubisoft’s starter guide describe the historical system.

DedSec’s early event challenge
During the 2023 Open Session, Ubisoft offered an event-specific way to earn DedSec: players had to earn 125,000 XP and claim the reward through a Ubisoft Connect account to unlock the faction permanently at launch. That was a limited early-access challenge, not an available post-shutdown method. Ubisoft’s Open Session article describes that offer.
The former Founder’s Pack offer
During the game’s active period, Ubisoft advertised the Founder’s Pack as including the DedSec faction and all its characters. It was a historical offer, not a present-day unlock option: purchases ended on December 3, 2024, and the service has since shut down. Ubisoft’s Founder’s Pack announcement describes what the pack offered.
Quick Recap
What the old unlock information does—and does not—tell you
- Established: Ubisoft said locked content could be earned with missions or challenges while the game was playable.
- Not established by Ubisoft’s cited guidance: a complete, reliable list of mission requirements for every individual character.
- Not a current option: the XP event challenge and Founder’s Pack were historical routes, and neither can restore access to the ended online service.
