Character designer Naoto Ohshima gave that explanation in a 2009 interview. Yuji Naka offered a related but distinct account in a 1996 SEGA.com interview, adding that blue suggested peace, trust, and coolness. Sonic did not turn blue in a story; the color was part of his design from the start.
Why is Sonic blue?
Ohshima, Sonic’s character designer, said: “Well, he’s blue because that’s Sega’s more-or-less official company color.” His explanation connects the character’s color directly to SEGA’s corporate identity. Read the 2009 Game Developer interview with Naoto Ohshima.
In a separate 1996 SEGA.com interview, co-creator Yuji Naka also cited SEGA’s image color, and added peace, trust, and coolness as associations of blue. That is Naka’s elaboration, not a quote from Ohshima. The interview is preserved in the Sonic Stadium archive. Read the archived interview.
How did Sonic’s design come together?
SEGA’s retrospective describes a design problem shaped by the Mega Drive’s capabilities. The company wanted a mascot to help sell its consoles, while competitors already had recognizable characters. It decided to build a fast-action game around the Mega Drive’s rendering and high-speed scrolling strengths.

- SONIC THE HEDGEHOG DESIGN: Your little gamer will love cuddling up with his new Sonic the Hedgehog pal. The popular SEGA videogame character brings his bold colors and fun spirited attitude to this Sonic Speed Unlimited cuddle pillow.
According to SEGA executive officer and Sonic Creative Officer Takashi Iizuka, the team wanted an attack that would not interrupt that speed. The idea of jumping into enemies led to a hedgehog that could curl into a spiky ball. Iizuka recalled: “That’s where the idea for a hedgehog, which rolls up into a spiky ball, came from.” This explains the hedgehog’s gameplay role; it is separate from the reason for Sonic’s blue color.
SEGA also aimed the character at North America, presenting him as a cool, somewhat rebellious hero who helps the weak. That marketing context helps explain Sonic’s broader persona, but the documented explanation for his color remains SEGA’s company color.
