Sign in with the Microsoft account linked to your Xbox profile, then open the menu for the kind of setting you want to change. For Xbox privacy and online safety, start on a console at Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety, or use Xbox.com. Profile, family, purchase and Microsoft account-data settings are handled in different places.
Choose the setting you want to change
“Xbox account settings” can mean several things. Identify the change first, because there is no single menu for all of them. Microsoft says settings are distributed across its products; Xbox-specific privacy controls, profile customization, family controls and saved account data each have their own route.
- Privacy and online safety: who can interact with you and other Xbox privacy choices.
- Profile: details such as your gamertag or profile appearance.
- Family and purchases: controls managed for a child account, including purchase approval.
- Microsoft account data: saved details and privacy choices associated with Microsoft products.
Change Xbox privacy and online safety settings
Microsoft identifies both the console and Xbox.com as ways to adjust Xbox privacy settings. On a console, menu labels can vary with software version and account context, but the documented starting point is Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety. See Xbox Support’s online safety and privacy guidance.
- Sign in to the Xbox profile linked to the Microsoft account you intend to update.
- On the console, open Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety, then choose Xbox privacy.
- Select View details & customize to find specific controls.
- Review the available choices, change the relevant setting and save if prompted. The available controls may depend on the account and its family context.
If the console labels differ, try Xbox.com for Xbox privacy settings. That alternative applies to Xbox privacy; it does not establish that every kind of account setting is available on the website.

Adjust who can send friend requests or follow you
Friends, followers & clubs is one category within the Xbox privacy customization menu. Xbox Wire’s September 11, 2024 guide documents controls there for who can send friend requests or follow an account: Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy > View details & customize > Friends, followers & clubs. Read the Xbox Wire guide.
Manage a child account and purchase approvals
For a child’s account, check the family controls managed by the parent or family organizer rather than assuming the child can change every setting independently. Microsoft documents console purchase-approval options under Settings > Account > Family settings. Consult Xbox Support’s child account safety guidance.

The documented Family settings route specifically covers purchase controls; it should not be treated as the path for every privacy or online-safety permission. Which controls appear can depend on the family role and account context.
Change a gamertag or other profile details
Profile customization is separate from privacy. For Xbox One, Microsoft documents this path for changing profile details such as a gamertag: System > Settings > Personalization > My profile > Customize profile. See Microsoft’s Xbox One gamertag instructions. This path is specifically documented for Xbox One, so check the current menus on other console versions.

Find Microsoft account data and privacy choices
For saved details associated with your Microsoft account, use the Microsoft privacy dashboard. Microsoft notes that account-data settings and product-specific privacy settings are not all in one place; a setting for a particular product may still need to be changed within that product.

- Check that you are signed in to the Microsoft account linked to the Xbox profile you mean to change.
- Confirm whether the setting is privacy, profile customization, family or purchase approval, or Microsoft account data; then use the matching route above.
- For a child account, look for controls available to the parent or family organizer.
- If a console menu differs, use Xbox.com for Xbox privacy settings or the Microsoft privacy dashboard for account-associated data. For other settings, consult the current Xbox Support page for that specific task.
Menu names and available options can change and may vary by console version, region, account age and family role. Microsoft’s cited Xbox One gamertag instructions may not match other console versions.
