To see which games a VAC ban affects, open the Steam client and go to Steam > Settings > Account. Select “Click here for details” under VAC Status. For other ban types, check your Steam profile or any restriction notice shown when you sign in; what appears depends on the kind of ban.
Check which games a VAC ban affects
- Open the Steam client.
- Go to Steam > Settings > Account.
- Under VAC Status, select “Click here for details”. Steam’s VAC status guidance says this page identifies which games the ban affects.
A VAC ban is issued through Valve Anti-Cheat and prevents play on VAC-secured servers for the affected game or games. Valve says VAC bans are permanent and non-negotiable; Steam Support does not manually remove them. If a ban was applied incorrectly, Valve says it will be removed automatically after investigation.
Check for a game ban
Open the account’s Steam Community profile and look for a game-ban notice. Permanent game bans are displayed on profiles, but temporary game bans or suspensions are not, so a profile with no notice does not rule out a temporary restriction. Valve says the game developer is solely responsible for applying a game ban. Contact that game’s developer for details or to ask about an appeal; see Steam’s game-ban guidance.
Check for another Steam account restriction
Sign in and read any lock or ban notification shown on the account. Steam generally presents details there while an account restriction is active. For help with a Steam account restriction, use the Steam Support Help Site. Valve says you do not need to contact an employee through chat or Discord; be cautious of anyone claiming to be a Valve employee in those channels.

How VAC, game, and server bans differ
| Ban type | Who issues it | Scope and where to check | Who to contact |
|---|---|---|---|
| VAC ban | Valve Anti-Cheat | Blocks access to VAC-secured servers for affected games. Check Steam > Settings > Account > “Click here for details” under VAC Status. | Steam Support does not manually remove a VAC ban; Valve says an incorrect ban is removed automatically after investigation. |
| Game ban | The game developer | Applies to the game using the feature. Permanent bans appear on Steam profiles; temporary bans or suspensions do not. | The game’s developer handles questions and appeals. |
| Server ban | The server administrator | Applies to that server and is separate from a VAC ban. | Contact the server administrator. Valve says server administrators cannot issue VAC bans. |
