PCSX2 needs a PlayStation 2 BIOS to run games. The PCSX2 project says the BIOS is proprietary, has no open-source alternative, and must be dumped from your own PS2—not downloaded from an unofficial site. The process is to prepare the console to run homebrew, use a dumper to copy its BIOS files, then select the folder containing those files in PCSX2’s setup wizard.

Before you start: you need your own PS2 BIOS

According to the PCSX2 project’s BIOS documentation, “PCSX2 cannot play games without a BIOS, and no open-source alternative exists.” BIOS files are proprietary, so the project directs users to dump them from their own PlayStation 2. Do not download BIOS files from unofficial sites.

The dump has two stages: enable the PS2 to run homebrew, then run a BIOS dumper on the console. PCSX2 recommends FreeMcBoot or FreeDVDBoot; it describes both as non-permanent software modifications. Which method is suitable depends on your console model and the materials you have.

Method Compatibility Skill and cost in PCSX2’s guide Notes
FreeMcBoot All fat models and all but the newest slim models. PCSX2 identifies the exception as 9xxxx serial models with a date code larger than 8B. Very low skill; about USD 15 in the guide. The guide’s page does not state a year, so this is not a current-market price. One of PCSX2’s recommended methods. Preconfigured memory cards are sold online, but confirm compatibility with your exact console.
FreeDVDBoot Many slim models and some fat models. Low skill; free according to the guide. One of PCSX2’s recommended methods; check the guide’s compatibility information for your model.
Fortuna A subset of slim models. PCXS2’s guide lists about USD 15, with no year stated. An alternative the guide describes as harder to find and use.
Disc-swap Not stated as a general compatibility range in the guide. Not stated in the guide. PCSX2 discourages this method for BIOS dumping.
Modchip Not stated as a general compatibility range in the guide. The guide lists USD 10–60, with no year stated, and says it requires soldering experience. PCSX2 reserves this for experienced solderers seeking capabilities beyond BIOS dumping.

These skill, compatibility, and cost descriptions are PCSX2’s guide information, not independently verified current market prices. Review the project’s BIOS setup guide before choosing, especially if you have a newer slim model.

Dump the BIOS to a USB drive

PCSX2 recommends biosdrain for the dump. The utility runs on the PS2 and, according to the project, does not alter the console. The USB method is the project’s recommended route for most users.

  1. Prepare the drive. Use a flash drive with an MBR partition table and a FAT32 filesystem. Formatting permanently erases the drive, so verify you have selected the correct device and copied off any files you need before formatting it.
  2. Copy the dumper. Put biosdrain.elf on the formatted drive, then connect it to the PS2.
  3. Run it from uLaunchELF. Open mass:, locate and launch the ELF file, then wait for the message “Finished Everything.”
  4. Copy the output to your computer. The dumper creates files whose names start with your console’s model ID. Extensions can include .rom0, .rom1, and .nvm, among related files.

PCXS2 also documents a network-host method using ps2link. It is unavailable if the console lacks networking support; the project recommends USB for most users. USB transfer on the PS2 is slow, and drive compatibility varies.

Check that the dump is intact (optional)

You can compare a BIOS file’s SHA1 hash with the entries in ReDump’s PS2 BIOS database. Run the command for your computer’s operating system, replacing [path-to-file] with the actual path to a file:

Select the BIOS in PCSX2

Install or launch PCSX2 from the official downloads page, then follow its setup wizard. The project’s current running guide documents the wizard for Windows, macOS, and Linux. When prompted for a BIOS, select the folder containing your own dumped files and complete the wizard.

Exact screen labels can change between releases. If the wizard on your version looks different, use PCSX2’s current setup documentation rather than relying on old instructions for legacy PCSX2 menus.

If PCSX2 or uLaunchELF cannot find the BIOS files

  • uLaunchELF shows an empty mass: device: PCSX2 notes that flash-drive and driver incompatibilities occur. Try another drive; the project suggests trying a USB 2.0 drive.
  • The dumper has not finished: Wait for “Finished Everything” before disconnecting the drive or copying files.
  • PCSX2 does not show your BIOS: Check that you selected the folder containing the dumped files, not an unrelated folder. Confirm the dump produced files with the console model ID prefix and BIOS-related extensions.
  • Your console is a newer slim model: FreeMcBoot does not cover every slim model. Check the model-specific compatibility information in PCSX2’s guide and consider a compatible alternative such as FreeDVDBoot or Fortuna.
