Xbox backward compatibility is a curated catalog, not a guarantee that every older game will run. Xbox One supports selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games; Xbox Series X|S supports selected Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. Check the official Xbox Backward Compatible Games catalog for a specific title before buying a game or console.
Which Xbox generations are backward compatible?
| Console | Older games supported | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox One | Selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games | Compatibility is limited to titles in Xbox’s catalog. |
| Xbox Series X|S | Selected Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games | Xbox One compatibility has exceptions; support and features vary by title. |
Backward compatibility is free for supported games you already own, according to Xbox’s FAQ. It does not add unsupported games to the catalog or guarantee that every compatible game receives visual or performance upgrades.
How do I use Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S backward compatibility?
For a digital game
Sign in with the account that owns the supported game. Find it in the console’s Ready to Install library, then download and install it. The catalog’s generation and feature filters can help verify a title before you look for it in your library.
For a physical Xbox 360 or original Xbox game
- Check that the exact title is listed in the official catalog and that your console has a disc drive.
- Insert the disc and allow the console to download and install the game.
- Keep the disc in the drive whenever you play; the disc is required to authenticate the game even after installation.
Xbox Series S is digital-only and cannot play discs. A Series X disc drive lets you use supported physical games, but it does not make an unlisted title compatible.

How to check the definitive Xbox backward-compatible games list
Use the Xbox Backward Compatible Games catalog as the current title checker. It organizes games by Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox and offers filters for features including 4K, FPS Boost, HDR, online multiplayer, local multiplayer, genre and maturity rating. Because the catalog is live and its game grid may change, confirm each title there rather than relying on an old copied list.
For a purchase decision, check both the game’s compatibility and the edition or format you own. Digital ownership should appear under Ready to Install; a physical Xbox 360 or original Xbox copy requires a disc-equipped console and the disc during play.

What enhancements do backward-compatible games get?
Some supported games on Series X|S can render at resolutions up to 4K. Auto HDR can add an HDR presentation to selected older standard-dynamic-range games, and FPS Boost raises frame rates for selected titles. These are game-specific options, not promises for every compatible game. Xbox’s catalog warns, “Specific features vary by game; download required.” Check the feature filters and the individual listing for the title you want. Xbox also describes more than 500,000 hours spent testing and meeting quality standards for Series X|S gameplay; the current catalog does not state a date for that figure.
Xbox’s February 17, 2021 FPS Boost announcement explains the feature, but a dated announcement is not a complete current list. Use the live catalog to check which games currently have FPS Boost or other listed enhancements.

What does original Xbox compatibility not include?
Compatibility does not restore every original Xbox online feature. Xbox says the original Xbox Live online services and in-game marketplaces for these titles are unavailable. Original Xbox games do not have Xbox achievements, and saves from the original Xbox do not transfer to Xbox One or Series X|S. Offline multiplayer and system-link may work when the original game supported those modes.

In an announcement dated November 15, 2021, Xbox called that day’s batch of more than 70 Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles the “latest and final addition” to the program. Xbox said licensing, legal and technical constraints had reached the limit of its ability to add games from the past at that time. That is the status described in the 2021 announcement, not a new statement about every future change to the catalog.

The 2021 batch included examples such as the Max Payne series, the F.E.A.R. franchise, Skate 2, Dead or Alive Ultimate, Star Wars: Jedi Knight II, Star Wars: Starfighter and Otogi. The announcement also said 11 newly added games and 26 existing titles were enabled for FPS Boost. Those counts describe the November 15, 2021 update, not the complete current catalog or FPS Boost roster. See Xbox’s November 15, 2021 announcement for the dated details.
