SpaceX Crew-1 carried four astronauts: Mike Hopkins, Victor Glover, Shannon Walker and Soichi Noguchi. After they arrived at the International Space Station, the full Expedition 64 crew numbered seven.
Who was on Crew-1?
- Mike Hopkins, spacecraft commander
- Victor Glover, pilot
- Shannon Walker, mission specialist
- Soichi Noguchi, mission specialist
The four flew aboard the Crew Dragon spacecraft Resilience. NASA described Crew-1 as the first crew-rotation mission of the Crew Dragon and Falcon 9 system under its Commercial Crew Program, with a planned six-month mission aboard the station. NASA’s Nov. 16, 2020 mission release gives the crew and mission details.
Why do some accounts say the crew numbered seven?
Seven refers to the ISS Expedition 64 crew after Crew-1 joined the three astronauts already aboard: commander Sergey Ryzhikov, flight engineer Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and NASA astronaut Kate Rubins. It is not the number of people launched on Crew-1. NASA said adding the new arrivals increased the long-duration station crew from six to seven, providing more crew time for research. NASA’s Nov. 15, 2020 handoff post describes the arrival.
What did the Crew-1 astronauts work on?
During Expedition 64, Crew-1 members contributed to research on how spaceflight affects bones, veins, arteries and the eye. Their work also included robotic assistants, space agriculture and space nutrition. NASA’s Expedition 64 overview summarizes these research areas.
