1000xRESIST began as a prototype from Remy Siu, a Vancouver performance artist with no conventional game-studio background. The project grew into Sunset Visitor’s first game: a science-fiction narrative shaped by the team’s theatre practice, the isolation of the pandemic and the realities of building a small studio. It was released on May 9, 2024, and Sunset Visitor describes it as a Peabody Award winner and Hugo and Nebula nominee.

Who made 1000xRESIST?

1000xRESIST was the first game from Sunset Visitor, a Vancouver studio that grew out of performance arts rather than a conventional game-development pipeline. MobileSyrup described its core as a quartet of performance artists who pivoted toward games after COVID-19 shut down much of their industry. The release credits Sunset Visitor as developer and Fellow Traveller as publisher.

Creative director Remy Siu wore several hats. He told TouchArcade that he guided the project’s vision, wrote alongside the writers, directed voice-over, built parts of the game in Unity—including lighting, level flow and audio implementation—and handled funding and tax credits. That range helps explain why the game’s distinctive stage-like storytelling was not simply an aesthetic layer: the team’s creative practice informed how it was made.

How did performance art shape the game?

Sunset Visitor has described the connection between performance and game development as a practical question as well as an artistic one: how could the team’s experience in the performing arts manifest in the production and storytelling? Lead writer Natalie Tin Yin Gan was also a dance artist and somatic voice teacher. In a Fellow Traveller developer diary, she recalled enjoying conversations about game mechanics in relation to storytelling and the creative process.

  • English, German, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, and Spanish in-game text.

Siu said theatre’s limits helped lead the team toward a game form that could alter individual settings to tell a larger story. A game can make spaces, perspectives and interactions part of the narrative in ways a stage production cannot. The team also sought to give the work a sense of “Vancouver-ness,” including B.C.-set flashbacks and details in a character’s apartment, as reported by MobileSyrup.

How did the project develop?

  1. March or April 2020: Siu began prototyping soon after COVID lockdowns started in Canada. He had set aside an earlier idea about retail theft as the strangeness of lockdown pushed him toward a different project.
  2. First prototype: The early build covered the first Communion in Chapter 1 and was more dreamlike than the finished game.
  3. June 1, 2021: After finding publisher Fellow Traveller and securing Canada Media Fund support, the team discarded the prototype and began production from scratch.
  4. Near completion: The team travelled from Vancouver to show the game at Day of the Devs: The Game Awards Edition, as recounted in the studio diary.
  5. May 9, 2024: 1000xRESIST launched, with Sunset Visitor as developer and Fellow Traveller as publisher.

The project’s path also depended on local support. In a July 7, 2025, Government of British Columbia release, Siu called the province’s Interactive Digital Media Tax Credit crucial to making the game real and helping the team reach the finish line when resources were scarce.

What is 1000xRESIST about?

The official synopsis introduces Watcher, who serves the ALLMOTHER in an underground community after an alien invasion and disease, then discovers a secret that changes everything. That premise is enough to establish the game’s speculative setting; explaining more would risk spoiling the story. Siu offered a compact description in a TouchArcade interview: “A narrative adventure where you experience the cruelty of time.”

The creative context was personal, but that does not make the game a literal autobiography. Siu said the pandemic influenced the project through alienation from the recent past—the odd nostalgia of missing “last year”—and the deaths of loved ones and mentors, including grandparents, a community mentor and beloved pets. MobileSyrup characterized the game’s themes as engaging with intergenerational trauma and Asian immigrant experience; that is the outlet’s framing of the work.

Siu also discussed Final Fantasy VII as an influence, saying he wanted to recreate the kind of feeling that game had given him as a child. Steam’s description names games by Yoko Taro, anime by Satoshi Kon and Naoko Yamada, and the theatre of Robert Wilson among the creators’ influences.

How was 1000xRESIST received?

Sunset Visitor’s official game page calls 1000xRESIST a Peabody Award winner and a Hugo and Nebula nominee. Steam displayed an 86 Metacritic score on its store listing when accessed in 2026; that is the score shown by the store, not an independently checked Metacritic page result.
