To voice chat in Rocket League, turn it on in Settings → Chat → Voice Chat Settings, choose a working microphone and audio output, then join either Party Voice Chat or Team Voice Chat. Open Mic is the default input mode described in Rocket League’s feature announcement; you can also enable Push-to-Talk and bind a key in Controls.

How do I turn on voice chat in Rocket League?

  1. Connect a working microphone and audio output, such as a headset. On PC, select the devices you want to use in Rocket League’s voice settings. The official instructions do not specify equivalent device menus for each console, so consult your console’s audio settings if you need to change its microphone or output route.
  2. Open Settings → Chat → Voice Chat Settings and inspect the permission setting. Depending on your account and parental controls, you may see options to allow chat with everyone, friends and teammates, friends only, or nobody (Off). Choose an option that includes the people you want to talk to. Rocket League’s v2.22 notes describe these options and note that parental controls can limit what appears.
  3. Join or create a party for Party Voice Chat, or enter a match to use Team Voice Chat. You can access, switch, or leave channels from the Voice Chat tab in the Friends List; the in-match pause menu also provides channel access. The voice-chat announcement explains the channel controls.
  4. Set your input mode. Open Mic is identified as the default in the feature announcement. To use Push-to-Talk, enable it and assign a key in Controls; the key is configurable, not universal. Later patch notes also describe a Voice Input Mode dropdown and Toggle Mute, so the exact control presentation can vary by game version. The v2.20 patch-note result supports the input-mode update.
  5. To adjust how loudly you hear other players, open Settings → Audio → Voice Chat and change the incoming voice volume, as described in the v2.15 notes.

Which voice channel should I use?

Channel Who you can talk to When the connection ends
Party Voice Chat Players in your party who have voice chat enabled It persists between matches while you remain in the party.
Team Voice Chat Players on your team in a match who have voice chat enabled It ends when the match finishes.

Rocket League says voice chat is fully cross-platform, but players cannot use it to speak with the opposing team. These details are in the May 9, 2022 v2.15 notes, which list Epic Games Store, PlayStation 4 and 5, Steam, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.

How do permissions affect who can hear you?

Permission settings control the audience you allow; they are separate from choosing Party or Team Voice Chat. The available choices described in the v2.22 notes are Allow Voice Chat with Everyone, Allow Voice Chat with Friends and Teammates Only, Allow Voice Chat with Friends Only, and Allow Voice Chat with Nobody (Off). Parental controls may hide or restrict some choices. If a permission level is missing, check the account’s parental-control settings.

What should I know about voice reporting?

Voice reporting is separate from the basic voice-chat permission and channel controls. According to Rocket League’s Voice Chat Reporting FAQ, when reporting is on, the game keeps a rolling capture of the last five minutes of voice audio on the player’s device; older audio is deleted as new audio is captured. Epic says it cannot access that audio unless voice reporting is on and a participant submits a report, which uploads the captured audio for moderator review.

The FAQ says reporting is always on in voice chats that include players under 18. Adults can choose Always On or Off When Possible under Chat → View Voice Chat Settings → Voice Reporting. Off When Possible applies only to Party Channels, not Team Channels; reporting may still be on in a Party Channel if another participant selected Always On. Check the Sidebar to see the reporting state. If you do not want audio captured, the FAQ says to mute yourself or turn voice chat off.

Why can’t I hear or be heard?

  • No one hears you on PC: Confirm Rocket League selected the intended input device and that your chosen input mode is active. For Push-to-Talk, check that the assigned key is bound in Controls.
  • Other players are too quiet: Adjust incoming voice volume at Settings → Audio → Voice Chat.
  • You cannot select the expected audience: Parental controls may limit the permission options shown.
  • The Sidebar says reporting is on: Team Channels have reporting on, and a Party Channel can have it on if any participant selected Always On. See the official reporting FAQ for the behavior and available controls.
  • The menu labels do not match these steps: The feature announcement and patch notes date from 2022, and later updates can change labels or controls. Look for Voice Chat Settings under Chat and verify the current in-game input-mode controls.

Rocket League has not stated in the cited current-facing guidance that voice chat is always enabled by default for every player. Check your own Voice Chat Settings rather than relying on a default-state assumption.
