To unlock Subo in Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred, progress through the expansion campaign until you can access the Mercenary Den in Nahantu. Interact with the Muddy Letter there, then complete the priority quest A Feather on the Scale. Once recruited, Subo can be assigned as your hired mercenary or as a reinforcement.
Unlock the Mercenary Den first
Mercenary recruitment becomes available during the Vessel of Hatred campaign. A campaign guide identifies The Hand Remembers the Blade as the quest that unlocks the Mercenary Den and hiring access. Blizzard describes the Den as the mercenaries’ hideout, where players complete key quests to recruit the other mercenaries. Blizzard’s mercenary overview explains the Den-based recruitment system.

Complete Subo’s recruitment quest
- Continue the Vessel of Hatred campaign until the Mercenary Den is available in Nahantu.
- Enter the Mercenary Den and interact with the Muddy Letter. The walkthrough identifies it as the item that starts Subo’s quest.
- Complete the priority quest A Feather on the Scale. Finishing it recruits Subo.
The quest name and letter are reported in a Subo walkthrough; Blizzard confirms the broader Den-based quest recruitment process.
Assign Subo as a hire or reinforcement
After recruiting him, use the Mercenary Den interface to choose Subo as your hired companion or set him as a reinforcement. A hired mercenary is the main companion who joins a solo player’s party. A reinforcement is a different unlocked mercenary who can appear during combat to use a skill when the configured opportunity occurs. You cannot assign the same mercenary to both roles at once. Blizzard also says that Rapport earned by using mercenaries in battle upgrades their skills and supports bartering at the Den.

What Subo does in combat
Subo is an archer who attacks from outside melee range and rains arrows on enemies. Blizzard says, “Subo will mark targets for your disposal—kill them to earn benefits such as reduced Ability cooldowns.” This is a qualitative description, not a numerical performance ranking or a guarantee of a particular cooldown reduction.
