Don’t put an unidentified ZIP straight into Minecraft’s mods folder. First check what it contains: a ZIP may be a modpack intended for launcher import, or an archive containing an individual mod file. For a single Java Edition mod, the usual manual install uses the compatible .jar file—not the ZIP itself.
First identify what the ZIP contains
The file extension alone does not tell you how to install it. Check the download page for the publisher’s instructions, then inspect the archive if needed. If it contains a compatible mod .jar, use that file for a manual install. If it is a modpack ZIP, import it through a launcher or app that supports that pack; copying the pack archive into the ordinary mods folder is not the modpack installation workflow.
Do not rename a ZIP to .jar. Changing the filename does not turn one file type into another.
Install an individual Java Edition mod
Check the mod’s requirements
On the mod’s download page, confirm the Minecraft version and required mod loader, such as Fabric or Forge. Check for dependencies as well. A mod and its dependencies must be compatible with the same game version and loader. Fabric also advises downloading mods only from sources you trust (Fabric Documentation: Installing Mods).

Find the mod file inside the ZIP
If the ZIP contains a .jar mod, use that file only if its version and loader match your setup. Follow the mod publisher’s directions if the archive has a different structure or specifies another installation method. Do not treat every ZIP as an installable single mod.
Put the compatible JAR in the mods folder
For Fabric, place the mod’s compatible .jar file—and any required compatible dependencies, such as Fabric API when the mod requires it—in the mods folder. The standard folder paths are:
- Windows:
%appdata%.minecraftmods - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods - Linux:
~/.minecraft/mods
If the folder does not exist, create it in the Minecraft installation directory used by the profile you intend to play.
Launch the matching profile
Open the Minecraft Launcher, select the Fabric profile, and start the game. For Forge or another loader, follow that loader’s current installation instructions and launch the matching profile. CurseForge’s Java Edition guide likewise describes manual installation in terms of matching the mod and loader versions, placing the mod .jar files and dependencies in the mods folder, and starting the corresponding profile (CurseForge: How to Install Minecraft Mods (Java Edition Guide)). Avoid mixing files for different loaders unless the mod or loader documentation explicitly supports that setup.

Install a modpack ZIP
Use a launcher or app that supports importing the pack, and follow its modpack import workflow. CurseForge documents installing modpacks through its app and website. If an import fails, check that the ZIP is valid and correctly structured using its support guidance (CurseForge Support: Installing Minecraft Mods and Modpacks).

The mod is missing in-game
- Confirm that you launched the profile for the loader the mod requires.
- Check that the mod’s game version and loader match the selected profile.
- Verify that you placed the
.jarin the installation directory used by that profile, rather than a different Minecraft directory.
The game crashes
Check that every installed mod and dependency matches the same Minecraft version and loader. To narrow down a conflict, remove recently added files one at a time and retry the game, adding them back individually once it starts.

You need official support
Fabric provides troubleshooting pages and a player-support channel. Minecraft Help states: “As modding is not officially supported, Minecraft Support cannot assist with issues arising from mod usage.” See Minecraft Help: Mods for Minecraft: Java Edition.
