The vendor no longer needs to meet a happiness threshold for the sale. Older guides that say otherwise describe an earlier version.
How to buy a pylon
- Choose the destination biome. Put a vendor NPC with a shop in the location where you want the pylon. The biome determines which pylon the vendor may offer; the current reference includes the Underworld and Aether pylons added in version 1.4.5. See the Terraria Wiki’s pylon reference.
- Keep another NPC nearby. A second NPC must be close enough for the location to count as a town. The available reference does not establish an exact distance, so there is no reliable radius to give here.
- Open the vendor’s shop and check its stock. If the corresponding biome pylon is offered, purchase it. Pylons are sold by vendor NPCs, not obtained by crafting.
NPC happiness can still affect prices and is shaped by biome and neighbor preferences, but in 1.4.5 it is not a requirement for unlocking a pylon sale. For the mechanics of happiness, see the Terraria Wiki’s NPC happiness guide.

Why older guides say NPCs must be happy
The requirement changed between versions. Pylons arrived in Desktop version 1.4.0.1. In 1.4.3.3, the rules required at least two NPCs and a minimum happiness level, expressed as a 0.9 price modifier. Re-Logic’s 1.4.3.3 patch notes describe that historical rule.
Version 1.4.5 removed the minimum happiness requirement for pylon sales, while retaining the need for another nearby NPC. It also added Underworld and Aether pylons. So if you are playing 1.4.5, do not keep rearranging NPCs just to reach the old 0.9 modifier; verify that a second NPC is nearby and that you are asking a vendor in the intended biome.

#1 Best Overall
- Build up a hospital from nothing to a masterpiece as you design the most beautiful – or functional – healthcare operation in the whole of Two Point County.
- Optimise your hospital design to increase patient (and cash) flow, arranging corridors, rooms and waiting areas to your exact specifications.
- Expand your hospital to multiple buildings as you look to get as many patients through the door as possible.
- Place decorative and functional items around your hospital to improve its prestige, lower patient boredom, increase happiness and keep those end of year awards flowing in.
- Features two great expansions, 21 hospitals and 119 very unusual illnesses!
If the vendor does not offer a pylon
- Check the nearby NPC: make sure another NPC is close enough for the area to qualify as a town.
- Check the location: confirm that the vendor is where you want the travel point and that the shop offers the matching biome pylon.
- Check your game version: the 1.4.5 change does not necessarily apply to older builds. On a version earlier than 1.4.5, the earlier happiness rule may still matter.
- Check your platform build: the reference covers Desktop, Console, and Mobile, but exact patch parity across every platform build is not established. Use the version displayed in your game when checking which rules apply.
What happiness still affects
Happiness remains relevant to NPC pricing and placement preferences. Its role in those systems should not be confused with the current pylon-sale condition: in 1.4.5, happiness is not the gate, but a second nearby NPC still is.
