The right method depends on where the world file is and which device you’re using. On Windows, follow Minecraft’s dedicated Bedrock world import guide. To move a world between devices, Minecraft documents using Realms. Android also supports copying worlds saved to External storage; the official iPhone and iPad instructions cover backups, not direct importing of downloaded world files.
Choose the method that matches your situation
| Your situation | Documented route | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Importing a world on a Windows PC | Use Minecraft’s Backup & Restore index to open its dedicated “Import a Minecraft: Bedrock World on a Windows PC” guide. | The index confirms the guide exists but does not provide its steps. Follow the current guide rather than relying on unverified menu or file-handling instructions. |
| Moving a world between devices | Use the official Realms transfer procedure. | You need an active Realms trial or paid subscription, and Minecraft must be up to date on both devices. |
| Copying an Android world to a computer or another Android device | Use USB file transfer if the world was created with File Storage Location set to External. | This is a backup and copy workflow, not a confirmed direct import process for downloaded .mcworld files. |
| Backing up worlds on iPhone or iPad | Use Finder on a Mac to copy the Minecraft games folder, or use iCloud for backup. | The official instructions do not establish how to import a downloaded world package directly. |
| Retrieving content you already own from Marketplace | Open Marketplace > My Library and download or create the content from there. | This retrieves Marketplace content; it is not an import route for an outside world file. |
Import a world on Windows
Minecraft Help lists a dedicated article, “Import a Minecraft: Bedrock World on a Windows PC,” in its Backup & Restore section. Open that article for the current Windows procedure. The available official index does not show the individual steps, so it does not support claims about particular menus, double-click behavior, or file extensions.
Transfer a world between devices with Realms
Minecraft’s documented cross-device method uses a Realm as an intermediate step: upload the world from the device that has it, then download it on the destination device. The guide requires an active Realms trial or paid subscription and current Minecraft versions on both devices.
- Prepare both devices. Confirm that the Realms trial or subscription is active, update Minecraft on the source and destination devices, and sign in with the Microsoft account you will use to access the Realm.
- Upload from the source device. Open Minecraft, choose Play, then Realms. Edit the Realm’s world slot. Choose Upload World for an empty slot, or Replace World if you intend to overwrite the world already in that slot. Confirm the upload.
- Download on the destination device. Sign in with the same Microsoft account, open the Realm, edit the relevant slot, and choose Download World.
- Find the local copy. The downloaded world appears on the Worlds tab with “World name – Copy”; use the pencil icon to rename it if you want.
See Minecraft’s Realm transfer guide for the live steps. Minecraft also explains how downloaded Realm worlds appear; interface placement and labels can vary.

Copy a world from Android using USB
This route applies only when the world was created with File Storage Location set to External. Minecraft’s instructions describe copying worlds to a computer or another Android device, not importing a downloaded world package directly.
- Connect the Android device to a computer with a USB cable that supports data transfer.
- On the Android device, select the USB notification and choose File Transfer or MTP.
- On the computer, browse to
Android > data > com.mojang.minecraftpe > files > games > com.mojang > minecraftWorlds. - Copy the
minecraftWorldsfolder or an individual world folder to the intended backup location or compatible destination.
If the world uses Application storage instead, Minecraft directs users to the Realms transfer instructions. See the full Android world backup guide for Minecraft’s current directions.

Back up worlds on iPhone or iPad
Minecraft’s official iPhone and iPad instructions describe copying game data for backup or transfer to another iOS device. They do not explain importing a downloaded .mcworld file.
- Connect the iPhone or iPad to a Mac with a USB cable.
- Open Finder and select the device under Locations.
- Choose Files, expand the Minecraft folder, and drag the games folder to a backup location.
Minecraft also mentions iCloud as an option for backing up the games folder. Consult its iPhone and iPad backup guide for details.

Retrieve Marketplace content or activate an Add-On
If you mean a world or content you already own through Minecraft Marketplace, use its in-game library rather than treating it as an outside world file. Go to Marketplace > My Library, find the item under Owned or Marketplace Pass, and choose the available action, such as Download, Create this World, or Equip. Minecraft’s Marketplace access guide describes this flow.
Add-Ons are enabled through their Resource Packs or Behavior Packs in settings for a new or existing world, or for a Realm. That activation process is separate from importing a world file; see Minecraft’s Add-On activation guide.

Before you troubleshoot
- Check that you are using Bedrock Edition; the Windows import resource is specifically for Bedrock.
- For an Android USB copy, verify the world’s storage location. The documented file path applies to worlds saved with External storage.
- For a transfer between devices, use Realms if available and follow Minecraft’s account and version requirements.
- For consoles, the official procedures cited here do not establish a direct local-file import route. Do not assume that an Android, iOS, or Windows file-copy process applies to a console.
- If you need direct downloaded-world-file instructions for Windows or mobile, use the relevant current Minecraft Help article rather than assuming that backup steps also import a file.
