Install GTA IV through the account or official launcher tied to your legitimate copy: use Steam for a Steam-owned copy, or redeem an eligible unused disc code in Rockstar Games Launcher. The steps differ, and an old disc is not guaranteed to activate.
Before you install: identify your copy
Use the route that matches where you own the game. Rockstar’s instructions cover an existing Steam entitlement and eligible physical PC copies; they do not call for downloading a separate setup file from an unofficial site.

Install or update GTA IV through Steam
- Sign in to the Steam account that owns GTA IV.
- Open Library, select Grand Theft Auto IV, and choose the available install or update option.
- Let Steam download and install the files. Rockstar’s support article, updated May 1, 2024, says existing owners who previously installed and played GTA IV can update to Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition. It estimated that update at approximately 6GB; Steam’s current download display is the relevant figure for your installation.
- Start the game from Steam and follow any Rockstar sign-in or activation prompts shown.
Rockstar’s instructions say existing GTA IV owners download content from Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City as part of the Complete Edition update. Its article describes that existing-owner update, not a full walkthrough for a first-time Steam install; for a fresh install, follow the current Steam Library prompts.
Install a physical PC disc copy
Rockstar’s documented disc route uses the activation code printed on the back of the game manual. It applies to copies that were not previously activated using Games for Windows Live.

- Download and install Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Sign in to your Rockstar Games account.
- Click your avatar in the upper-right corner and choose Redeem Code.
- Enter the Rockstar Activation Code from the back of the manual and follow the launcher prompts to activate and update the game.
Rockstar says a serial code is non-transferable once used and can be registered to only one Rockstar account. A secondhand disc may therefore have a code that is already bound to another account and cannot be redeemed again.

These are Rockstar’s published minimums, not a guarantee that every PC meeting them will work. Rockstar cautions that some integrated, mobile, and AGP graphics may be incompatible and that unlisted specifications may not be supported. Its Store page also lists graphics requirements that differ from the more detailed Support listing above; check Rockstar Support for current guidance if your system differs or compatibility is uncertain.
Account, internet, and activation
Rockstar lists a Rockstar Games account and network connection for setup and online play. Internet access is required for activation, online play, and periodic entitlement verification. Its listed supporting software includes Rockstar Games platform, DirectX, Chromium, and Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package; follow the official installer’s prompts rather than sourcing components from unofficial download pages.

If activation fails
Use Rockstar Support’s activation help for GTA IV PC. The support process asks for the product key, the unlock request code displayed during installation and activation, and the exact error message. Include those details when contacting Rockstar; avoid third-party key sellers and unofficial executable downloads as attempted fixes.
