Yes—you can charge a DUALSHOCK 4 without a PS4 console or its usual power adapter. Connect it with a USB-standard-compliant cable to a computer or another USB device, then check that the battery icon blinks. Some USB sources will not charge the controller, so the indicator—not connector fit alone—is the confirmation.
Charge the DUALSHOCK 4 from a computer
- Use a compatible USB cable that fits the controller’s USB port.
- Connect the controller to a computer’s USB port.
- Hold the PS button to open the Quick Menu and check the battery icon. It should blink while charging.
Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 instruction manual lists a computer as a charging option. A fully depleted controller takes about two hours to charge, according to PlayStation Support.
Try another USB device or a compatible USB charger
Sony also permits charging from another USB device with a USB-standard-compliant cable, but warns that some devices may not charge the controller. A phone charger, TV port, power bank, or other USB source is therefore not guaranteed to work. Connect it and look for the blinking battery icon before assuming the battery is charging.
Sony’s 2013 European FAQ says a universal Micro-USB charger that supports the Dedicated Charging Port (DCP) specification can charge the DUALSHOCK 4. Treat this as compatibility guidance, not a promise that every wall charger will work; confirm charging on the controller. Sony’s FAQ describes that charger option.

Use a DUALSHOCK 4 charging station
If you have access to a dedicated station, it can charge the controller without connecting a cable to its USB port. The official CUH-ZDC1 station connects through the controller’s extension port and uses the station’s supplied AC adapter and cord. Its light bar blinks orange during charging and turns off when charging is complete, according to the station instruction manual. If the controller does not appear to charge
- Check that the cable is fully connected at both ends and is USB-standard-compliant.
- Try a different USB source; some devices do not charge the controller.
- Use the blinking battery icon in the Quick Menu as the check that charging is underway. With the official charging station, check for its blinking orange light instead.
- If it still will not charge properly, follow PlayStation Support’s controller troubleshooting guidance, which recommends resetting the controller when charging problems persist.
Charge safely and care for the battery
Sony recommends charging at 10 °C–30 °C (50 °F–86 °F); charging may be less effective outside that range. Battery duration gradually decreases with repeated use and age, and also varies with storage, use, and environmental conditions, according to the controller manual.

For extended storage, Sony recommends fully charging the controller at least once a year. Do not open, modify, or directly wire the controller to reach its battery: Sony warns that misuse of the built-in lithium-ion battery can cause fire and burns.
