Niantic advertised an increased shiny chance, but did not publish a numerical rate or guarantee a shiny. The event ran on March 23, 2024, and has ended.
How the Shiny Groudon encounter worked
- During the event, find and join a Primal Groudon raid.
- Defeat the raid boss.
- Complete the resulting encounter to try to catch Groudon; the encounter was with standard-form Groudon, not its Primal form.
Niantic said the event offered an “Increased chance to encounter Shiny Groudon.” That meant a boosted chance, not a guaranteed shiny. The official announcement did not give a percentage, so a specific rate should not be treated as official. Pokémon GO’s event announcement

When the Raid Day took place
The event was Saturday, March 23, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time. Primal Groudon appeared more frequently in raids during that window. This was a past event, not an active opportunity to raid Groudon now. Pokémon GO’s event announcement
Free participation and the optional ticket
Players could participate without buying a ticket. The ticket added resources and raid rewards, but it did not guarantee a shiny.

What “Primal Groudon” means for the catch
Primal Groudon was the raid boss form, but defeating it led to a catch encounter with ordinary Groudon. A caught Groudon can undergo Primal Reversion after you collect Groudon-specific Primal Energy. Niantic says Primal Energy can be earned by defeating Primal Groudon or Primal Kyogre in raids, or by completing certain research tasks. Primal Reversion lasts eight hours. Can you get Shiny Groudon now?
The March 2024 Raid Day is over. A later Road of Legends event also listed Primal Groudon raids on July 10, 2026, with the usual notice that a shiny might be encountered, but that event has passed as well. Those past events do not establish current availability. For a present-day opportunity, check Pokémon GO’s official event announcements and the in-game raid schedule, since raid rotations change.
