There is no single unlock condition in DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO: playable characters come from story progression, specific battles and objectives, tournament rewards, wishes, and the in-game shop. For the base game, play through the available story and challenge content first, then use earned Zeni to fill roster gaps. That is a practical low-spend approach, not a tested fastest route. Post-launch DLC exists, but the sources available for this guide do not establish a complete current-build DLC unlock list.
Which unlock method should you try first?
Start with play-earned rewards before spending Zeni. Episode Battle and other challenge content can unlock characters directly, while the shop can fill gaps afterward. Check the exact battle name and condition for any character you are targeting: a particular route choice, victory, or number of uses may matter. The unlock details below are based on specialist guides published in October and November 2024, alongside official Bandai Namco information; check your current in-game menus for changes.
Ways to unlock characters
| Route | What to do | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Episode Battle | Progress through the story episodes and their branching situations. | The official mode handbook describes eight featured perspectives: Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo, Future Trunks, Goku Black, Frieza, and Jiren. Character rewards can depend on a particular route or battle outcome; simply completing every episode is not established as a guarantee that you will unlock everyone. |
| Bonus Battles | Complete the named battle tied to the reward. | Game8 lists Janemba for completing “A Difficult Fight: Search for Representative Member.” Treat this as a documented example, not a complete reward list. |
| Offline tournaments | Win an offline tournament that offers a character reward. | Specialist unlock guidance includes offline tournament wins among the free unlock routes. Check the tournament’s listed prize rather than assuming every tournament awards a character. This refers to offline tournaments, not online competitive events. |
| Zen-Oh’s Orders | Complete the stated play-pattern objective. | Game8 gives Android 13 as an example: play as any Android in Battle Mode 20 times. This is a repeated-use objective, not a story reward. |
| Dragon Ball wishes | Use a wish when a playable character is among the available rewards. | Bandai Namco’s product information describes an Ultimate Edition Shenron summon that can grant wishes including items such as Zeni or playable characters. PowerPyx also lists Super Shenron wishes as an acquisition route. The Ultimate Edition summon is an edition bonus, not a prerequisite for ordinary character unlocks. |
| In-game shop | Spend Zeni earned through play on characters available for purchase. | Guides report that shop stock expands as Player Level rises and commonly identify Level 20 as a base-roster milestone. Treat that as guide-reported rather than a guarantee for every current build or DLC character; check the shop in your game. A character earned by another method may not need to be purchased. |
How to avoid spending Zeni on characters you can earn
- Check your roster and the shop. Note which characters are still missing, and which of them are currently purchasable.
- Play Episode Battle. Follow the available perspectives and pay attention to battle outcomes and branching situations rather than assuming a single completion condition unlocks the full roster.
- Check Bonus Battles and Zen-Oh’s Orders. Read each reward or objective before starting; a character may require a named battle or repeated use of a character type.
- Look at offline tournament prizes. Enter tournaments that list a character reward, and confirm whether the reward requires a win.
- Use a wish only if its listed reward fits your goal. Character wishes are one option, but the available sources do not establish that every character can be wished for.
- Buy remaining shop characters with earned Zeni. Recheck the roster first so you do not spend currency on someone already unlocked through play.
This order is a way to prioritize non-shop unlock opportunities; it is not a measured time or efficiency ranking. The cited guides do not establish one universally best shop purchase order.
Does “every character” include DLC?
Not necessarily. Bandai Namco Entertainment America announced 181 playable characters at launch in 2024. A Bandai Namco Holdings report in February 2025 described a 182-character roster. Those figures refer to different publication and version contexts, so neither should be treated as a current total across every platform and DLC build. Bandai Namco’s official Japanese DLC page confirms that post-launch DLC exists, but the available sources do not provide a complete current DLC roster or verify each DLC character’s unlock method. For an exact count, specify the platform, game version, and whether paid DLC is included.
