You can travel through the air in Minecraft Survival, but you cannot hover freely as you do in Creative. Use an Elytra with firework rockets for a player-controlled glide, or ride a Harness-equipped Happy Ghast for steerable flight. If you specifically want Creative-style free flight, you must switch to Creative mode where you have permission; enabling cheats in a Bedrock world permanently disables that world’s achievements.
What “flying” means in Survival
Survival offers ways to move through the air, not the unrestricted hovering and vertical movement of Creative mode. Minecraft describes Creative as allowing players to fly freely, while Survival centers on gathering resources and surviving. That distinction matters: an Elytra glides, a Happy Ghast carries you through the air, and a Riptide trident gives a brief launch. None is the same as Creative flight. Minecraft’s game-mode overview

Choose a Survival flight method
| Method | What it does | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Elytra and fireworks | Glides forward; rockets boost your flight. It does not let you hover in place. | An Elytra and firework rockets. The cited mechanics guide describes equipping the Elytra in the chest slot, jumping from a height, then activating it while airborne. MC Toolkit’s flight guide |
| Happy Ghast | A steerable flying mount that can carry up to four players. | A grown Happy Ghast and a Harness. The Java 1.21.6 Harness recipe is three leather, two glass blocks, and one wool block. Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.6 notes; Minecraft Bedrock 1.21.80 notes |
| Riptide trident | Launches you forward or upward in wet conditions; it does not sustain free flight. | A Riptide-enchanted trident and water or rain. The cited guide describes this mechanic for Java 26.3; it is not official cross-edition guidance. MC Toolkit’s flight guide |
How to glide with an Elytra
- Equip the Elytra in your chest slot.
- Get airborne by jumping from a height.
- While falling, activate the Elytra to begin gliding.
- Use a firework rocket during the glide to boost forward.
This is the familiar Survival option for flying under your own control, but it depends on momentum and does not provide stationary hovering. The activation sequence and rocket detail are described by MC Toolkit’s guide.
How to fly on a Happy Ghast
Happy Ghasts provide a Survival flying mount. Minecraft’s Java 1.21.6 notes say the mob is mountable and that the first rider controls it; a Harness is required to ride. The Harness recipe in those notes is three leather, two glass blocks, and one wool block. Its color matches the wool used, and it can be dyed again. Up to four players can mount one Happy Ghast. - Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Minecraft’s Bedrock 1.21.80 notes also describe the Happy Ghast as a flying mount for up to four players. The Chase the Skies drop, which brought the mount to both Java and Bedrock, became playable on June 17, 2025. Bedrock 1.21.80 notes; Chase the Skies announcement
This method requires raising the mob and making its Harness, so it is not an instant flight toggle.

Can commands give you Creative flight while staying in Survival?
The cited official command documentation establishes how to enable commands and that command use depends on permissions; Microsoft’s Bedrock examples include /gamemode creative. That command changes your game mode to Creative rather than granting Creative-style flight while keeping you in Survival. The sources cited here do not establish a general vanilla command that adds Creative flight to a Survival player across editions. Minecraft commands guide; Microsoft Learn: Bedrock commands
In Java single-player, commands can be enabled through the world options. In Bedrock single-player, use the world’s Allow Cheats setting. Turning cheats on permanently disables achievements for that world, even if cheats are later turned off. In multiplayer, command access depends on your permissions. Minecraft commands guide
