If you want tridents, use a natural-spawn farm—not a zombie spawner: drowned made by converting zombies are not the source to rely on for tridents. Choose a design labeled for your Minecraft edition and version, because Java and Bedrock spawning requirements differ.
Choose the farm for the drops you want

For tridents, the official Minecraft guide says the chance of finding one in Bedrock Edition was about one in 188, a figure published in 2021. Treat that as a dated, Bedrock-specific probability—not a current universal rate or a Java statistic. See Minecraft’s 2021 trident guide.
How the farm works
A natural-spawn farm has four functional parts: a dark spawning area, water that carries drowned away, a chute or drop that gathers them, and a chamber where you can kill them and collect drops. The exact shape and water arrangement depend on the chosen edition-specific design; no single set of dimensions is established here.
Build a natural-spawn farm
- Pick your goal and edition. Decide whether you want tridents or ordinary drops and experience. For tridents, select a natural-spawn design explicitly intended for your edition and version.
- Follow that design’s platform layout. Aerial designs aim to limit competing spawn locations. The Minecraft Wiki tutorial’s indexed description distinguishes the editions: its Bedrock design uses a wet spawning platform beneath a glass-bottomed pool, while Java may need two layers of water. The tutorial page’s construction details were not directly available for verification, so check its diagrams and version label before building.
- Direct drowned to a collection point. Use the selected design’s water-flow arrangement to move drowned into a chute or collection area. Follow its diagrams rather than guessing dimensions or water placement.
- Make a safe kill chamber. Minecraft’s official guide describes dropping drowned into a convenient chamber where a player can use a sword and collect experience. Account for thrown tridents when positioning yourself, and include item collection or storage if your design calls for it.
- Test before expanding. Check that the farm is operating under the intended difficulty, biome, light, available spawn space, and simulation conditions. Confirm the design’s version guidance in your own world before investing in a larger build.
Why edition matters
Bedrock’s documented drowned spawn-rule example lists underwater spawning, a brightness filter of 0–7, Easy through Hard difficulty, and ocean, river, and dripstone-cave biome conditions. The example also gives different spawn weights and surface-density limits for those biome cases. Microsoft Learn last updated this documentation on September 19, 2023, so it describes the documented rules rather than guaranteeing behavior in every 2026 release: Bedrock drowned spawn_rule.
Java and Bedrock do not necessarily share the same water-layer setup or spawning behavior. The Minecraft Wiki tutorial covers both editions and distinguishes natural-spawn farms from zombie-spawner conversions, but its detailed instructions should be treated cautiously unless you can confirm the page’s version and construction diagrams: Minecraft Wiki: Drowned farming.
Kill and collect with the intended method
If you are aiming for rare drops, preserve the player’s role in the kill rather than assuming every automated mechanism gives the same results. Minecraft’s official 2021 guide says Looting III improves the chance of rare trident drops. For context, Mojang describes the trident as a weapon intended for underwater use and notes that it can be swung or thrown in its Taking Inventory: Trident article.

What to check if drowned are not appearing
- Edition and version: Make sure the design matches your game, rather than borrowing a water layout from another edition.
- Biome and spawning conditions: For Bedrock, compare your location and conditions with Microsoft’s documented spawn-rule example.
- Light and spawn space: Confirm the spawning area is dark enough and unobstructed for the design you are following.
- Collection route: Check that water actually carries drowned toward the chute and that they can reach the kill chamber.
- Output expectations: Farm rates and exact dimensions are not established by the cited sources, so avoid treating a particular items-per-hour claim as guaranteed without a verified build and version.
