In tabletop RPGs, for example, D&D’s artificer feature, Pathfinder 2e’s crafting rules, and Draw Steel’s downtime project all work differently. If you mean a video game, the title matters too; its own crafting or upgrade system determines the steps.
First identify the game and edition
“Imbuing” can mean creating a magical item, applying an enhancement, or using an item that is already magical. Those are different rules questions. The examples below are tabletop RPG rules, not a universal guide for video games. Check the specific game’s crafting or item-upgrade instructions before following any procedure.
Dungeons & Dragons: an artificer can infuse items
D&D Beyond’s Artificer 101: A Beginner’s Guide to Making Magical Marvels describes Infuse Items as an artificer class feature that gives mundane objects magical potency. In the guide’s rules version, a 2nd-level artificer knows four infusions and can have two items infused. These figures belong to that guide’s rules context; confirm the edition and applicable rules before using them for a character.
Attunement is not item creation
The cited 5e SRD magic-item rules describe attunement as a bond some existing magic items require before their properties can be used. It involves focusing on and touching the item during a short rest, subject to the item’s prerequisites. Attunement, speaking a command word, or using an item’s activation method does not add magic to an ordinary object. The individual item description specifies how it works.

Pathfinder 2e: magical crafting requires a feat
The Pathfinder 2e crafting and treasure rules state that a character needs the Magical Crafting feat to craft magical items. The rules also distinguish items whose effects work automatically from those that require activation or investment. This is a crafting prerequisite, not the D&D artificer’s infusion feature; consult the rules version used in your game for the full process.
Draw Steel: use the Imbue Treasure downtime project
In Draw Steel, the Steel Compendium’s Imbue Treasure project starts with a mundane item, such as a sword or shield. The project allows up to three imbuements: choose a 1st-level enhancement first, then a 5th-level enhancement, then a 9th-level enhancement. A hero’s ability to benefit from a weapon or armor enhancement also depends on level and kit requirements.

What to check in the rules for your game
Before attempting to imbue an item, look up these details in the rules for the game and edition you are playing:

- What you start with: the process may use a mundane item, particular materials, or another specified component.
- How it happens: check for a crafting procedure, required time, or downtime project.
- Which effects are available: rules may offer a defined list of infusions or enhancements rather than unrestricted enchantment.
- What limits apply: character level, item count, enhancement tier, or kit requirements may restrict the result.
- Whether you are creating or using: attunement and activation rules explain how to use certain existing magic items, not how to enchant mundane ones.
