When the Emperor approaches, choose welcoming dialogue to continue into the intimate scene.
Steps to trigger the scene
- Reach Act Three and consume the Astral-Touched Tadpole. The Act Three camp-event listing identifies this as a requirement.
- Complete Visit the Emperor’s Old Hideout. This is the other listed requirement for the event.
- Take a Long Rest after the hideout quest. The scene is an Act Three camp event, and the romance guide says it may occur on a Long Rest after the quest. Check camp before advancing far beyond the hideout.
- Respond receptively when the Emperor speaks to you. Welcoming responses continue the romance; rejecting the advances takes the encounter in another direction.
The requirements and event details are documented on the BG3 Wiki’s Emperor romance page and its Act Three camp-event listing.
Choose the Emperor’s form
During the scene, you can choose intimacy with the Emperor in its illithid form or its Dream Guardian form. Both choices lead to a romanced relationship. The guide describes the aftermath of choosing the illithid form as closer in the narrator’s framing; it does not establish a gameplay advantage for either form.
What can prevent or delay the scene?
An earlier choice at the Crèche
The romance guide warns that trying to kill the Dream Guardian during the Crèche Y’llek Planecaster interaction can lock you out of the Emperor romance.

- Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!
Missing the camp event
If the scene has not appeared, confirm that you consumed the Astral-Touched Tadpole and finished the hideout quest, then take a Long Rest. Relevant post-hideout scenes can be missed if you progress without resting at the right point, so check for camp events before moving much further through Act Three.
Rejecting the Emperor
Rejecting the advances leads to a more hostile tone in later interactions, according to the romance guide. Choose a welcoming response only if that is the story direction you want.

What the romance changes
The guide describes this as the primary Emperor romance scene and says it does not end other ongoing romances, including Lae’zel’s. A later conversation with Raphael can acknowledge the Emperor as your character’s lover. The Act Three camp-event listing associates the event with the Mind Blown achievement.
Larian’s Patch 7 notes provide official game-update context, but do not independently document these romance prerequisites. If the event still fails to trigger, check whether your current game version has changed relevant behavior; the cited romance guide does not establish a patch-specific change.
