Its practical strength depends on your level, access to bodies or bones, campaign logistics, and how much time your table is willing to spend managing multiple creatures.
This guide uses the 2014 School of Necromancy. D&D Beyond distinguishes 2014 character options from the revised rules, and the proposed 2025 Necromancer subclass is Unearthed Arcana playtest material—not a finalized replacement. Use the rules and source books your table has chosen.
Why choose the 2014 School of Necromancy Wizard?
A Necromancer Wizard remains a full Wizard: undead creation is the signature plan, not a reason to abandon the class’s wider spellcasting role. That matters because a campaign may not always offer suitable corpses, bones, time, or room for a group of undead. The 2014 Basic Rules describe the school this way: “Necromancy spells manipulate the energies of life and death.” Read the 2014 Basic Rules’ explanation of the schools of magic.
There is no verified official statistic establishing one necromancer build as universally strongest. A useful comparison instead asks how a build performs at the level the campaign reaches, what undead it can create and keep under control, how much attention those creatures take in combat, and how useful the character remains when undead creation is impractical.

Make Animate Dead the core of the build
Animate Dead is a 3rd-level Necromancy spell with a 1-minute casting time. It needs bones or a corpse of a Small or Medium Humanoid: bones produce a skeleton, while a corpse produces a zombie. The spell also requires a drop of blood, a piece of flesh, and a pinch of bone dust. See the official Animate Dead listing.
What upcasting changes
For each spell-slot level above 3rd, the spell animates or reasserts control over two additional undead creatures. Each creature must come from a different corpse or pile of bones. Upcasting therefore increases the number affected by that casting; it does not remove the need for appropriate remains or turn the undead into a cost-free, permanent resource.

Plan for the ongoing control cost
Keeping undead under control takes recurring attention, spell slots, and time. Treat that upkeep as part of the build rather than assuming a horde remains yours indefinitely after one casting. Because the current D&D Beyond spell page shows both current and Legacy availability, check the 2014 rules text your table uses for the exact control and upkeep wording before relying on details such as command range or daily timing.
Make the creatures manageable at the table
Agree on a simple way to issue commands and track each creature before combat. Keep the relevant statistics, initiative order, and intended actions ready so the extra turns do not overwhelm the rest of the table. This is practical table advice, not a special rule that changes how the spell works.

Add Create Undead when the campaign supports it
Create Undead is a 6th-level Wizard spell, so it is a later-tier option rather than the low-level foundation of the build. It takes 1 minute to cast and requires one black onyx stone worth at least 150 GP for each corpse. Whether it fits depends on reaching the required spell level and being able to meet that material cost. See the official Create Undead listing.
The spell’s control rules differ from the basic plan: you can command the creatures as a bonus action while they are within 120 feet, and they remain under your control for 24 hours before control must be reasserted. When uncommanded, they Dodge and move only to avoid harm. Higher-level spell slots offer options for creating more ghouls or stronger undead, so consult the spell’s listed options before deciding how to use a slot.

Keep the rules versions separate
D&D Beyond says players retain access to 2014 core-rulebook character options alongside support for revised rules. Its March 2, 2026 editor note clarifies its use of “5e” for 2014 rules and “5.5e” for the revised rules. Those labels help distinguish materials; your table’s chosen rules and source books determine which options apply. Check D&D Beyond’s changelog for its access and rules updates. Read its overview of the core-rules labeling clarification.
Wizards of the Coast’s 2025 Unearthed Arcana: Arcane Subclasses Update proposes a substantially revised Necromancer Wizard, but it is playtest material, not a finalized subclass. Its proposed features include Necromancy Savant, Necromancy Spellbook, Grave Power, Undead Thralls, Harvest Undead, and Death’s Master. The design also revises the subclass’s approach to an undead familiar, healing undead, and undead created with Animate Dead. Do not combine those proposed features with the 2014 School of Necromancy unless your table has agreed to use the playtest document. Read the 2025 Unearthed Arcana playtest document.

Quick Recap
Use this build when its logistics work
- Level: The central plan depends on access to a 3rd-level spell; Create Undead is a higher-level addition.
- Materials: You need suitable Humanoid remains for Animate Dead; Create Undead also calls for costly black onyx per corpse.
- Control: The spells impose ongoing control requirements, so consider whether recurring casting and tracking fit the campaign.
- Table pace: Multiple controlled creatures may add time and complexity to combat. Agree on efficient commands and turn handling with the group.
- Fallback value: Since this is a Wizard build, its identity need not depend on having undead available in every scene.
